Nationalisation of the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe is “likely” the UK’s business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said in a rare weekend emergency debate in parliament on Saturday, 12 April.

MPs were debating emergency legislation aimed at blocking the firm’s Chinese owners, Jingye, from closing blast furnaces at the Lincolnshire site after the prime minister warned the future of the company “hangs in the balance”.

If the plant were to shut down, then the UK would become the only member of the G7 without the ability to make virgin steel, which would be a risk to the country’s economic security, the government has said.

President Donald Trump has told reporters that he wants Iran to flourish, but he does not want the country to have nuclear weapons.

Speaking outside Air Force One on Friday, 11 April, Mr Trump said, “I want Iran to be a wonderful, great, happy country, but they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Muscat in Oman for indirect talks with Iran over its nuclear programme on Saturday.

The president has given Iran 60 days to agree to a deal.

Three people are dead after a small plane crashed near a major highway in Boca Raton, Florida on Friday afternoon.

The aircraft, a Cessna 310, crashed around 10.20am after departing from Boca Raton Airport around 10.13am. The plane was heading to Tallahassee International Airport. Data from Flightradar24 showed the plane trying to return to the Boca airport shortly after takeoff.

Officials said the aircraft was experiencing mechanical issues.

Top US diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff has travelled to Russia ahead of a meeting with Vladimir Putin, according to reports.

It comes as John Healey has urged allies to “look again” at what else they can do to provide military aid to Ukraine.

The UK defence secretary was addressing defence ministers at a meeting in Brussels, and unveiled a fresh round of military support for Ukraine worth £450m, of which the UK is providing £350m.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of running active recruitment campaigns in China, and having as many as 155 Chinese nationals fighting in his ranks.
