Israel has accused Iran of violating a ceasefire just hours after it came into effect, with defence minister Israel Katz vowing a forceful response on the heart of Tehran.

It comes after the military said it had detected missiles launched from Iran towards Israel on Tuesday morning, soon after prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel has agreed to a Donald Trump-brokered ceasefire with Iran.

Qatar temporarily closed its airspace and grounded all flights before reports of explosions in its capital, Doha.

This measure was taken after US forces struck nuclear sites in Iran, leading Tehran to launch retaliatory ballistic missiles against Israel on Monday (23 June).

The White House and the Defense Department are closely monitoring potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which is the largest US military installation in the Middle East

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this morning that Israel has agreed to a Donald Trump-brokered ceasefire with Iran.

The US president announced that a “complete and total” halt to hostilities between Israel and Iran was in effect from 8am local time. "Please do not violate" the ceasefire, Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social.

At least four people were killed in Israel’s Beersheba on Tuesday morning as Iran fired several waves of missiles before the ceasefire took effect.

Pro-Palestinian activist and Columbia University student, Mahmoud Khalil, was welcomed back to NYC with cheers after release from ICE detention.

Khalil was released from the Louisiana detention center, where he was held for more than three months, on Friday, June 21st, 2025, and entered New York again the following day.

His return to New York City has been referred to as "A people's victory" in a post from the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

Mahmoud Khalil has been released on bail and is happily reunited with his wife and newborn son.

Some holidaymakers currently in Cyprus or those with trips booked to the island may be looking at the map of the eastern Mediterranean with concern, given the new Foreign Office warning that “ongoing hostilities in the region” could “escalate quickly and pose security risks for the wider region”.

Israel, only 145 miles from the popular Cypriot resort of Ayia Napa, launched airstrikes on Iran on 13 June, and the two countries have since continued to carry out attacks back and forth. The US then became involved after launching attacks on Tehran’s nuclear facilities over the weekend.

US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday (22 June) raised “deep concerns” of an imminent international conflict, according to The Independent international correspondent, Bel Trew.

Iran launched missile strikes on a US base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation on Monday evening, with Iran’s Tasnim news agency confirming the operation.

There are also growing fears Iran may target the Strait of Hormuz, Trew explained.

Experts have cast doubt on Donald Trump’s claim that the US “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear sites in an operation called Midnight Hammer, which struck three different facilities early Sunday morning.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said that no one “is in a position to assess the underground damage at Fordow,” one targeted site.

Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed that uncertainty in a press conference, saying, “It would be way too early for me to comment on what may or may not still be there.”

Watch as protesters clash with police in London on Monday (23 June) at a demonstration in solidarity with Palestine Action.

Protesters gathered in Trafalgar Square as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced she would ban the group under anti-terrorism laws following its vandalism of two planes at an RAF base on Friday (20 June).

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were filmed clashing with numerous demonstrators, some wearing black face coverings and waving Palestine flags, whilst chants of “shame on you” were heard.

Police said 13 arrests were made at the protest.

On Sunday (22 June), Palestine Action was banned by the force from protesting outside parliament, leading the activists to move the demonstration to Trafalgar Square instead.
