The exhumation process is difficult and dangerous — scattered remains, animal interference, and unsafe terrain make each operation unpredictable.

These Ukrainian volunteers are not only digging for bodies but also preparing them for possible repatriation or exchanges for Ukrainian soldiers who died in Russian-occupied territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed for the first time that Ukraine's forcesare conducting an incursion into Belgorod, a region just across the border from Ukraine. He said the operation is meant to protect border areas like Sumy and Kharkiv from further attack.

Zelenskyy also noted that Ukrainian troops are present in Russia’s Kursk region. A video released by Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade on April 7 reportedly shows drone strikes as part of the offensive in Belgorod.

Military expert Oleksandr Musiyenko explained that the goal of the incursion is to prevent Russian forces from regrouping and preparing an invasion.

Moscow has not confirmed on its side that any Ukrainian forces are fighting on Russian soil.
