updates on the election Day Election Day in the United States is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In 2024, it falls on November 5th. This tradition, established in the 19th century, allows citizens to vote for a range of offices, from the presidency to local government roles, as well as on ballot measures.

Election Day marks the culmination of campaigns, where candidates have worked to win the support of voters. For the presidential race, Americans vote for electors, who then participate in the Electoral College to officially elect the president. This system, established by the U.S. Constitution, is unique to American democracy and was designed to balance representation across states.

Polling stations open early and close in the evening, with each state responsible for administering its elections. Absentee ballots and early voting have expanded significantly, allowing more citizens to participate and making Election Day less congested. Results are typically announced the night of the election, though some states with close races or high numbers of mail-in ballots may take longer to report.
