Two years ago, we made the extremely difficult and, frankly, heartbreaking decision to stop publishing the print edition of The Hightower Lowdown, after over 20 years in the business. In the end, we just couldn’t bear the costs of rising paper, production and postage. We hadn’t broke even in a long time, for sure, but the pandemic’s effect on print finally sealed the deal: We couldn’t keep food on our tables and keep doing what we’d always done.
We took a leap of faith and decided to move to this email newsletter model, currently hosted here at Substack. This was terrifying, knowing that not everyone was going to be thrilled moving to an all-digital experience, but we hoped that what we have to offer here would be enough to sustain you, and us.
Last week, we hit a whopping 50,000 subscribers to our work! And a really sizable chunk of you are even paid subscribers. Wow. This vote of confidence has blown us all away, and we cannot thank you enough for the support you’ve shown. You never fail to fight the good fight with us, and we couldn’t be prouder to be in it with you.
We’re plotting quite a bit behind the scenes, here—oodles of collaborations with the grassroots activists on the front lines, mining the history archives to help us understand what’s happening now, and, as always, speaking truth to power and holding it accountable. Not for the faint of heart! But with you here with us, we know we’ll persist, resist and win.
Thank you again for trusting us with your eyeballs and fingertips. We know it’s a firehose of media out there, and we truly appreciate you spending time with us.
Keep agitating!
