Corbin Burnes First Start and Christian Yelich hits a home run
PHOENIX -- It was 50 degrees when Corbin Burnes threw his first Spring Training pitch. That’s surprisingly chilly for March in Arizona, but perfect conditions for a pitcher likely to make a second consecutive Opening Day start at Wrigley Field.
In fact, Burnes would be perfectly happy with 50 degrees on March 30 in Chicago.
“This would be beautiful on Opening Day,” Burnes said. “If you could pencil that in, I would take it.”
The Brewers would take an extended version of Thursday’s type of performance from Burnes in a 7-4 loss to the Rangers, one four-pitch walk aside. He was scheduled to work two innings, but wound up heading back to the mound for the start of the third because he’d only thrown 19 pitches to that point. Burnes was charged with a pair of runs following a leadoff walk in the third, but all told, it was a productive debut for three reasons.
1. He got some extra work in
“We were trying to get ‘up’ twice and get that pitch count to 20-30,” Burnes said. “We didn’t get there after two, so the lucky winner -- me – got to go out there for the third. But it was good. It was good to get out there three times.”
Pitchers talk more these days about “ups” -- the number of times they get up from the bench to pitch an inning -- than they do about raw pitch count. Each of the Brewers starters is on a somewhat different program this spring, based on the club’s experiences with them and, in some cases, their own wishes. Burnes said he was unhappy with his live batting practice sessions and simulated games prior to his Cactus League outing against the Rangers, so he considered Thursday a step forward.
In a week of lousy injury news throughout the league, the Brewers caught a heavy blow Wednesday. Craig Counsell announced that Tyrone Taylor had to receive an injection in his injured elbow, and is likely to miss the first month of the season. How will the Brewers fill out their early-season roster without him?

March 02, 2023 Do We Need a Salary Cap to help the Brewers? Devin Williams Adjusts well in first outing, Loss to the Angels, Opening Day Roster again
Major League Baseball is reportedly pushing to install a salary cap to close the gap between MLB's richest teams and its smaller-market franchises.
According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, commissioner Rob Manfred has said MLB's economic reform committee is focusing on television distribution and revenue disparity, but an industry source told Drellich an "underlying motivation" of the committee is to address small-market owners' concerns:
"The whole idea is to basically come up with a system that gets to a salary cap. Rob didn't lie by saying it has to do with the [regional sports networks], dealing with the RSNs. Because these teams will lose more money and the disparity will get bigger. So they're using that excuse to have a study committee."TEMPE, Ariz. -- Devin Williams' first Spring Training outing in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Angels went like this: One inning pitched, three flyouts to center field and no pitch timer violations.
It was a routine debut for the Brewers’ most methodical pitcher as he ramps up for the World Baseball Classic.
“I’m pretty much used to [the pitch timer] at this point,” said Williams, who, like all of the Brewers’ pitchers, has already thrown a series of bullpens and live batting practice sessions while on the clock. “Maybe I’ll adjust a little more as time goes on, but I felt pretty comfortable out there.”
He added: “It’s nothing foreign anymore.”

Under MLB’s new rules, pitchers have 15 seconds to deliver their next pitch after they receive the ball back from the catcher or an umpire when the bases are empty, and 20 seconds when there are runners on base. That’s something to watch for with Williams, who took the fifth-longest break between pitches among the pitchers who qualified for Statcast’s “tempo” leaderboard last season.
