  • Nuw: ‘In an open relationship with your wardrobe’
Welcome back to Mimazine on Air Season 3!

This week's game changer is Aisling Bryne, founder and CEO of Nuw - ‘a social network to share clothes with people in your local community and extend the life cycle of our wardrobes.’

Aisling founded the community in 2015 to make sustainable and ethical fashion more accessible after seeing the industry's true cost and devastating impacts firsthand.

Nuw tries to curb the fast fashion mentality of see it, buy it, wear it once, recognising things need to change and  believing we all have the power to change them.
We talk all about the social and environmental impacts of the fashion industry, the stories behind our clothes and the joy of sharing pieces. We also dive into greenwashing, marketing ploys such as Black Friday and discuss ways forward for the industry.

    Data mentioned:
    • 11 million garments end up in UK landfill each week - Oxfam UK.

You can find more about Nuw on their website and Instagram.

This week's game changer is Emma Askew - soil scientist, environmental researcher and founder of EARTH Minutes - a collaboration of environmental researchers and creatives, sharing a strong ambition to drive global change for people and the planet.

Their two fundamental values are creativity and optimism - two words you don't often associate with environmental activism and climate justice.

We talk about using optimism as a tool, dealing with climate anxiety and burn out, billionaires and dodging the blame game and the power of creativity in environmental education.

    Data mentioned:

  • 3: Australia Day or Invasion Day?
This week I we are the annual Invasion Day March in Sydney on the 26th January 2020.
The 26th January is celebrated by many as the founding day of Australia, the day Captain Cook first ‘discovered’ the nation. However, in recent years there has been a growing unease with this name. For many it is a day of mourning, the day 267 years old Indigenous genocide began.
I spoke to Aboriginal tribal elders, spokespeople and campaigners who explained why this day is so painful for them and about the inequality and prejudices Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face.
As part of this, we hear from a grieving mother about her son’s death in custody.
This is a very pofwerful and emotional episode which discussed topics some listeners may find upsetting.
