Evan and Katie VanDoren are two very talented and accomplished educators within the music and marching arts world! In this episode, they're going to let us in on some ways they work together as a team both in music and in their marriage to bring out the best in each other!
Katie is a Band Director at Vandegrift HS in Austin, TX and Evan is a former band director who now runs his own music arranging and consulting company, VanDoren Music. They're both currently on Staff at the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps - Evan as the Brass Arranger and Katie as the Assistant Brass Caption Manager.
They're a great example of what it's like to fully support and believe in your spouse and their abilities. They lead busy lives, but have learned how to divide tasks and maximize their time in order to keep up with work and home responsibilities, all while still making sure they invest in their marriage by spending quality time together.
They give some great tips and advice in many areas, and we hope you enjoy spending some time with them as much as we did!

Bill gets candid and opens up about some things that most people would want to leave out of their story, but he knows by sharing these experiences, others will be able to travel down a better road! Bill marched with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps for 5 seasons on Tuba and after aging out, he joined the cast of the Emmy and Tony Award winning show Blast! He toured for 6 years with the company, performing throughout North America, Japan, and South Korea. Bill has also taught multiple drum corps including the Boston Crusaders, Crossmen, and the Colts and is currently a show designer and arranger for various ensembles across the country.
We're excited for you to hear his story and all of the great strategies he's learned over the years that helped lead him to success as a freelance artist!

Traveling the world and playing music for a living sounds glamorous, but there's a lot more to this profession than meets the eye. In Part one of this candid interview, Bill lets us in on the journey he took to become a thriving and successful freelance musician. We start at the beginning, learning how he got into music, his drum corps career, touring the world with blast! and freelance gigs! He even lets us in on some mistakes he's made in the past and how the lessons he learned helped him get to where he is today.

Drew is also a musician and member of the marching arts/drum corps community who played mellophone with the Long Island Kingsmen Drum and Bugle Corps in the 1980's. He's a great guy who loves helping others and we're so glad he came on the podcast to share his expertise!

Lot Riot's founder discusses building his business and brand from the ground up!
Matt Verburg started his company because of his passion for percussion and the marching arts. After realizing there was something missing when it came to clothing culture within our activity, Matt took action and created the awesome company, “LOT RIOT”, which gave drummers and marchers a brand they were proud to rep both in and out of rehearsal.
With high quality materials and unique designs, LOT RIOT is now known as the clothing brand that bonds the marching community.
In this candid interview, Matt discusses how his love for the marching arts came to be, some of the struggles of owning a small business, and his mindset for providing the best possible experience for his customers.
This "pockets" focused episode is full of great tidbits of information, especially if you're an entrepreneur or thinking about starting your own business.

Carolyn has an extensive background in both performing and teaching in the marching arts activity! In this episode, she shares all about her upbringing in Clifton Park, NY, her color guard journey, and the road that eventually lead her to study neuroscience and physical therapy.
She also gives us some practical tips on ways to add a little more physical activity to our lives and how making small adjustments to our work environments, (especially if we're working from home) can benefit our bodies. Lastly, she touches on a three step approach she likes to take when trying to create different habits.

We continue our conversation with USAF Staff Sergeant Brad Green in Part 2 of The Weight of Words. Brad shares how he ended up joining the cast of the Emmy and Tony Award winning show "Blast!" and how touring with a bunch of creative musicians helped him hone his arranging and composing skills and realize his passion for writing music!
Brad also touches on the similarities between drum corps and Air Force Basic Training, the importance of choosing your words wisely as an educator, and reflects on some moments as a teacher where he would have liked to approach things differently.
This episode is full of incredibly valuable life lessons, so you might want to take notes!
