Tune in this week to hear  the stories of Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper. These women have taken part in forging a way for women in the STEM field and allowing women today to do what we love. Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese American particle and experimental physicist and she made significant contributions in the fields of nuclear and particle physics. Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral who made contributions to programming Mark I, II, and III. She also developed along with her team the first computer language "compiler" and  coined the phrase "debugging" as she was taking apart Mark 2 with her team and found a moth, hence "debugging" the computer. Tune into this two-part series to hear their remarkable stories and how they forged a path for women in the STEM field. Without women like Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper fighting for their place and indirectly the place of all women in the STEM field we could have been stuck in a society where women weren’t allowed to contribute. Although we have a long way to go for the fight of equality, it’s important to keep in mind when we all fight together our voices are heard and this is where we see change.

Meet Ndidi Edeh- Larberg, a Maternal and Child Health Epidemiologist for Summit County Public Health Department. She comes with experience in investigating and advising other health officials, government, and communities on birth outcomes. In addition to working at the Summit Country Public Health Department, she is also currently working on her PhD to determine if racism is the root cause for poor birth outcomes for African American women. We discuss heavy topics like infant fatality, embedded racism in women's health, and different programs families can apply for with some facts you probably didn't know. We also discuss her being a new mom and how she "treats" herself. Tune in to find out about all of this and more!

Meet Ashlyn Treherne, a personal trainer, coach, and instructor with 11 years of experience and a Bachelors in Exercise Science. She currently does all of these things but in addition to all of that she also focuses on Outdoor Education. Ashlyn in transitioning into the field of Environmental Education and teaching individuals how to responsibly take part in outdoor recreation. In this episode we talk about all things exercise science/physiology & how she educates individuals about outdoor recreation. Tune in and learn about forest bathing, what you can do to help your local community, and if you're looking to become a coach/trainer she gives some really great pointers!

Today, we are changing it up with Alyssa Flynn as your host and me as your guest!  My name is Jamie Respondek as you know and I’m the host of Mind your STEM podcast. In addition to creating this podcast for all my wonderful listeners, i'm an Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager for a renewable energy company. I have a Bachelor in Science in Environmental Science, a Master in Science in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University, in addition to a Master in Business Law (MBL) in European and International Energy Law from Technische Universität Berlin. Today, i'm discussing a little bit about the environmental science field and what's it's like to be a women in the science realm from my experience. I'm so excited to introduce to you Ti'Air Riggins, a Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate at Michigan State University. Ti' investigates implantable electrodes to tune immune responses in the brain, (AMAZING!) in the REIL lab under the direction of Dr. Erin Purcell. She is a current NIH F99/K00 fellow and was named a fellow in the Society for Neuroscience from 2016-2018. Additionally, she is in the speaker's bureau for the Rape and Incest National Network. She's an exceptional woman and I'm so happy she is able to share her story with you all and encourage women to pursue a path in engineering.

Alexandra Hoopes is an Epidemiologist for a large health insurance provider. She works closely with clinical and business leaders to drive operational analytics for population identification, program need, and emerging risk. Alexandra holds a MPH (Master in Public Health) degree, with a specialization in Epidemiology.

Today, we are stepping into the world of Electrical Engineering and Cybersecurity with Mansi Singh all the way from India! Mansi has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering but is currently working in the world of Cybersecurity at Deloitte. Welcome to the first episode of Mind your STEM! 

Our first episode focuses on Alyssa Flynn. She works in the technology field, more specifically the broadcast industry. She was born and raised in Canada where she obtained a diploma in Television Broadcasting and received a certificate in Digital Post Production at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. After graduation, she worked in post production facilities, dubbing houses, and broadcast centers, as well as working on live sporting events. Alyssa currently works for a broadcast graphics company in Berlin, Germany as a Broadcast Integration Engineer handling their weather software.

This episode is to just really tell you about what this season will be about and the purpose behind it. This is an interview like podcast, interviewing women from all over the world, showcasing them in the STEM field. Each episode will be between 30-45 minutes.
