April 03, 2015 It Is Finished
Do you ever think about what really happened on the cross so long ago? Have you ever thought about why Jesus died? If not, you probably should. The answers are revealed in the final words Jesus spoke while on the cross.
In this meditation, we will be transported back in time 2,000 years to Golgotha to hear the final words of Jesus on the cross. Then we will contemplate what those words mean for us today.

Steve's Commentary:
When Jesus said, "It is finished". He was not making a simple statement of fact. He was revealing a powerful truth that impacts many areas of our life as believers. I have been powerfully moved by visual depictions of the crucifixion such as The Passion of the Christ and Son of God. I think it is important to remember the brutality of that moment. This meditation however serves a different purpose and is not brutal or graphic. This meditation is focused on the meaning of the event and the meaning of the words of Christ on that dark, horrible, wonderful day. A day when God closed the book on the old covenant and opened the new. As He did this, He declared with His dying breath, "It is finished".

February 26, 2015Holy, Holy, Holy
Holy, Holy, Holy was written by Reginald Heber in 1861. The hymn was composed to celebrate Trinity Sunday and uses a three-fold repetition throughout to emphasize the triune nature of God.
Throughout the hymn "holy, holy, holy"

Verse 2 "was, is, and evermore shall be"

Verse 3 "perfect in power, in love, and purity"

Verse 4 "earth, and sky, and sea"
We do not often meditate on the truth of the trinity. Many denominations and church traditions tend to emphasize one member of the Godhead above the others. That is human nature. It is helpful at times to stop and be mindful of the amazing truth of one God in three unique persons.
Holy, Holy, Holy is more than a nice song with cool repetition. The song is a musical picture of a scene recorded by two men in the Bible. In Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah sees a vision of God on His throne.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."
from Isaiah 6:1-3 (NIV)
The other man was the apostle John who saw a vision of God on His throne while in exile on the island Patmos. This is recorded in Revelation 4 and is the primary scripture reference in this meditation.
Our hope is through this meditation you will grow in your relationship with the fullness of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

September 04, 2014 Peace (My One Word)
My pastor, Mike Ashcraft wrote a book with Rachel Olsen titled, My One Word. The book encourages people to choose one word to be their word for the year. During the year you focus on your word. A great way to focus on something is through "mindful meditation".
This meditation focuses on the word, peace. If you are participating in My One Word this may be a terrific way to keep the word if front of you during the year. Even if you don't have "one word" for the year, it will be a helpful exercise to spend a week or month focusing on the word, peace.

August 20, 2014 Salt and Light
Some of the simplest things in the Bible are also the most profound. We find many of these simple things in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. One of those being His exhortation that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
In this meditation, you will have the opportunity to contemplate this passage in short pieces which are repeated with stress on different words and phrases. It’s a little different from most of our previous meditations in that there is no commentary or instruction as you meditate. It’s just you, and God, with Jesus teaching you what He has called you to be--Salt and Light.

July 31, 2014 Know My Anxious Thoughts
With good reason, we live in a very stressful time. Many of us feel guilty because we struggle with these thoughts. As I meditated on scriptures that dealt with anxiety and worry I realized a few very important truths. First, being anxious is not a sin. Second, worry and anxiety can be a symptom of sin. Finally, anxious thoughts sometimes lead us to sin.
In this meditation I will guide you through a process described by King David in Psalm 139:23-24, which will help you break free of guilt by inviting God to evaluate your anxious thoughts. Inviting God into this area will help you face your anxiety, worry, stress, and fear in a way that honors our Lord, Jesus Christ.

This meditation is the ninth of a ten part series on The Fruit of the Spirit. Have you ever considered, when reading your Bible or sharing scripture, how your tone of voice can greatly alter its meaning? We might read a passage with a harsh tone of voice and have it come across as judgemental and condemning. We might read that same passage with a soft gentle voice and have it comes across as compassionate and understanding. Our God is a gentle God who wants to give his gift of gentleness to the world through us--the fruit of the Spirit is Gentleness.
We began this series with a contemplative overview of The Fruit of the Spirit, and the next seven episodes focused on the fruits of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, and Faithfulness. This meditation is the eighth of a ten part series on The Fruit of the Spirit. So often, when we think of faithfulness, we consider only our own faithfulness toward God. However, just as God is faithful to us, so has he called us to be faithful to others. God wants people to see His faithfulness expressed through us toward them. In this meditation you'll contemplate and explore God's faithfulness toward you and the fruit of faithfulness in your own life--the fruit of the Spirit is Faithfulness.

This meditation is the seventh of a ten part series on The Fruit of the Spirit. We often label people's actions as being good or bad. We usually find it easy to judge the actions of others, but it is more difficult to judge our own actions. God wants our actions to express excellence in virtue, morality, character, and attitude--a combined quality called 'goodness'. In this meditation you'll contemplate and explore God's goodness toward you and the fruit of goodness in your own life--the fruit of the Spirit is Goodness.
We began this series with a contemplative overview of The Fruit of the Spirit, and the next five episodes focused on the fruits of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, and Kindness. If you would like to do this particular series of biblical meditations in order, you'll want to begin with these six meditations.
I continue to appreciate everyone's patience with the release of this new meditation. June 20, 2010The Fruit of the Spirit is Kindness
This meditation is the sixth of a ten part series on The Fruit of the Spirit. Personally, I usually think of kindness more as just generally being nice and friendly to people. However, the new testament principle of kindness is much more than that. Kindness is very active. Biblical kindness is actively helping others. In this meditation you'll contemplate and explore God's kindness toward you before you were a believer and after you accepted his forgiveness. You'll also contemplate Jesus' teachings on being kind to those who oppose you and Paul's teachings on being kind to other believers. God wants us to bear the fruit of His kindness through us because he was kind to us. His kindness lead us to repentance and as we allow the Holy Spirit to produce kindness through us, others will be led to repentance as well--the fruit of the Spirit is Kindness.

Once again, it's hard to believe that it has been 7 months since I've published a new meditation. I recently shared on my personal blog about how I've been dealing with depression and didn't know it. That, along with other things in my life, prohibited the writing and recording of this meditation. I would really like to return to producing new meditations on a regular weekly basis. This meditation is the fourth of a ten part series on The Fruit of the Spirit. In today's turbulent world, so many people are seeking peace. Unfortunately, many are seeking peace through changes to their circumstances, instead of seeking the peace of Christ in the midst of, and in spite of, their circumstances. In this guided Christian meditation, you'll contemplate some of the New Testament passages that explain what peace is, how Jesus has given us His peace, and how we can become the blessed peacemakers God has called us to be. Peace is not something we produce on our own, but rather, the fruit of the Spirit is Peace.
