  • Ep. 4 - The Child I Never Left Behind

The child we once were doesn't disappear simply because we grow up.

Sometimes that child is still reacting, protecting, hiding, fighting, or simply trying to be heard.

In this episode of Minding the Gap, T.C. Miller reflects on the early experiences that shaped her understanding of love, safety, authority, belonging, fear, and finding her voice.

Growing up around alcoholism, instability, discipline, loss, and survival taught T.C. lessons long before she had the language to understand them. Some helped her survive. Others followed her into adulthood, influencing how she responded to relationships, conflict, fear, and uncertainty.

T.C. explores what changed when she stopped judging those younger parts of herself and began asking a different question: What did that child learn, and is she still living by those lessons today?

This episode isn't about staying in the past. It's about understanding where our emotional patterns began, recognizing what no longer serves us, and learning to approach ourselves with greater awareness, compassion, and the freedom to make conscious choices.

  • Ep. 3 - A Lie Is a Lie and a Thief Is a Thief

Where Did My Thinking Come From? Before we can change the way we think, we may have to ask where those thoughts came from in the first place.

In this episode of Minding the Gap, T.C. Miller explores how family, school, religion, culture, community, race, and lived experiences shape our beliefs long before we realize we're absorbing them.

From an early age, we take in messages about what's right, what's possible, what's expected, and who we're supposed to be. Over time, those messages become part of our internal dialogue, influencing how we see ourselves, make decisions, and navigate the world.

T.C. reflects on what changed when she began questioning whether the beliefs she'd carried for years were truly her own.

  • Ep. 2 - The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Who told you who you are? And how much of what you believe about yourself did you actually choose?

In this episode of Minding the Gap, T.C. Miller explores the stories, labels, and identities we collect throughout our lives—and what happens when we begin questioning whether they're still true.

Teacher. Employee. Daughter. Successful. Failure. Responsible. Strong.

Some of these identities describe us. Others were handed to us through family, school, work, culture, or circumstance. Over time, these labels can become stories we repeat so often that we stop questioning whether they still fit.

T.C. reflects on her own experience of separating who she is from the roles she's held, learning to challenge old narratives, and beginning to define herself from the inside out.

This episode invites us to examine the stories we've been telling ourselves and consider whether they're helping us grow or keeping us tied to identities we've outgrown.

    In This Episode

    • How labels and identities shape the way we see ourselves
    • Understanding the difference between who we are and what we do
    • Recognizing how external validation influences our identity
    • How family expectations and cultural messages shape self-perception
    • Redefining what success and failure really mean
    • Navigating the loss of a title, position, or role
    • Learning to question old stories rather than automatically believing them
    • Making conscious choices that support personal growth and authentic living

  • Ep. 1 - What It Means to Mind the Gap

What happens inside us when life changes outside us?

In the first episode of Minding the Gap, T.C. Miller introduces the podcast's central idea: the space between what happens to us and how we choose to respond.

After losing the teaching job she'd held for twenty-one years, T.C. found herself navigating an unexpected life transition. What initially felt like disruption became an opportunity to pause, look inward, and ask deeper questions about identity, fear, responsibility, purpose, and what comes next.

T.C. reflects on the importance of slowing down before reacting, listening for inner guidance, and learning to make conscious choices even when the path forward isn't clear.

This episode is about recognizing that while we can't always control what happens to us, we can become more intentional about how we respond.

    In This Episode

    • Understanding what it means to “mind the gap”
    • Why what happens to us is only part of the story
    • Recognizing the difference between reacting and responding
    • Finding opportunities for growth during unexpected life transitions
    • Learning to pause, look inward, discern, and act
    • Trusting inner guidance, one step at a time
    • Using mindfulness and awareness to navigate uncertainty
