Throughout Season One in our conversations with industry leaders, policymakers, and experts, we examined how critical minerals underpin everything from advanced technology and healthcare to infrastructure and national security. From supply chain transparency and responsible mining to the geopolitical realities shaping global mineral markets, this season unpacked the challenges — and opportunities — facing the United States and its allies.

We spoke with leaders across government, industry, and policy to better understand how secure supply chains are built, why traceability matters, and what it will take to responsibly develop the resources needed for the future.

Season One also highlighted the growing recognition that mining is no longer viewed solely as an economic activity. Today, it is increasingly seen as a strategic necessity.

As we close out our first season, we want to thank the incredible guests who joined us to share their expertise and insights. Their perspectives helped illuminate the complex ecosystem behind the minerals that power modern society.

Episode Summary: In our third episode of the Minerals Metals Initiative podcast, our host Alberto Rosende speaks with Hugo Schumann, CEO of EverMetal Capital and CEO, USA of Elemental Group, to discuss the critical importance of metals recycling in transforming the critical minerals supply chain and de-risking national security. Schumann noted that current U.S. metal recycling rates are only around 20% to 30%, meaning 70% to 80% of consumed metals are being thrown into landfills, highlighting the urgent need for better collection infrastructure and consumer incentives to build a true circular economy in the U.S. Schumann is addressing this challenge through EverMetal, which is executing a dedicated roll-up strategy to acquire and professionalize U.S. metals recycling companies.

She has authored or co-authored more than twenty publications shaping modern trade and economic policy. Mahnaz Khan also serves as a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council GeoTech Center, where she focuses on the intersection of national security, trade policy, and energy security.
