This is my presentation as one of four panelist tonight at a Zoom event hosted by Congregation Dorshei Emet, titled "End of Life: Planning and Care." My topic was MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying), and I outline sources in classical Jewish law which prohibit this practice, in spite of its noble and humane motives. I share my experiences in Montreal with government and hospital pledges that were made to us, a group of orthodox rabbis, in 2014, and the ways in which I have seen those pledges broken. And I present the way in which I help those who choose MAID, notwithstanding my opinion, with respect, empathy, sensitivity, and support - both emotional and spiritual. In Jewish law, there is no difference in Jewish ritual between how a person who passed away with MAID is treated, and any other deceased person.
