This morning we discuss Eruv Tavshilin, the mechanism we create this Wednesday, that allows us, this Friday, to do certain preparations for this Shabbat, that would ordinarily not be permitted due to the prohibition against using one holy day to prepare for another, instead of appreciating it for its own sake. We quote an explanation for this from Rabbi Saul Berman. And we explain the details of how this is done, this coming Wednesday. Note: during this video, I think I made the mistake of referring to Wednesday as the first day of Pesach. Of course Pesach this year, 5783, is Thursday and Friday.

This morning, using a technique from Dr. Viktor Frankl, we explore the transcendent meaning of exerting ourselves in these days to clean and remove every trace of Chometz (the leavened products we do not eat or even own on Passover). Taught to me by my friend Benji Friedman, and loosely based on the writing of Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, we explain why becoming God's partner, our life's mission, does not apply at Exodus, which is why Moshe's name is absent from the Haggadah narrative.

This morning we discuss the name for this Shabbat, the Shabbat before Passover: Shabbat HaGadol, the Great Shabbat. We present several reasons for this name, but focus on the surprising approach of Rabbi Shaul of Modzitz. The Great Shabbat is to diminish this Shabbat as only Great, not, as we say in the Retzei prayer (added on Shabbat to Birkat HaMazon, the grace after meals), Great and Holy. And it is the seeds of this lesser Shabbat that will lead us, after experiencing Passover, to the Great and Holy Shabbat forever after.

This morning we discuss the underlying goal of retelling our story of slavery in, and exodus from Egypt at the Passover Seder. I share the insight of Rabbi Moshe Glustein, that the passage we quote (starting with the words Arami Oved Avi...) occurs in the Torah within the context of giving thanks, showing gratitude. This underlying theme is expressed in the two types of questions included in Mah Nishtaneh, the Four Questions. All questions are legitimate, but we must focus on the second type at least as much as we focus on the first type.

This morning we discuss the curious fact that how we make Matza is derived from our Torah portion, VaYikra, where we learn that (virtually) all the loaves baked in the Bet HaMikdash were Matzah all year. The ingredients were different from what we use, as the Kohanim (Priests) were Zerizim - quick, super-careful, and punctilious in getting it right. We should apply this attitude to all Mitzvot we perform, to do it in the best way! And we demonstrate this with a hard-to-believe story from Rabbi Pesach Krohn.
