G-d Will Send a Protective Angel

G-d says that He will send an angel* before them to protect them as they are fated to sin in constructing the golden calf.

*The angel G-d sent was the angel Metatron, who’s numerical value is the same as G-d’s name Sha-dai (314).

He continues and says that He will bring them to the place which He has prepared, alluding to the Land of Israel, or alternatively, according to the midrash, to the Temple. Saying that it is a place which G-d has already prepared is alluding to the earthly Temple mirroring the heavenly Temple.

G-d warns the Israelites to beware of the angel and not disobey him. Angels, being direct emissaries from G-d don’t have free will and thus no evil inclination (yetzer hara). They are thus not able to empathize with people who do sin, so this angel will not be forgiving.

G-d says that if they listen to the angel and do what he says, the angel will go before them and G-d will bring the Israelites to their enemies, namely the Amorites, the Chitites, the Perizites, the Cannanites, the Chivites and the Jesubites, and he will distress and ultimately eradicate them.

G-d warns the Israelites not to worship their idols but rather to destroy these.

Rather they should worship G-d and He will bless their food and water and take away sickness from them.
