Australia’s annual NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Katie marks it every year with an hour of music by First Nations artists. This year’s songs have all been released in 2023 or 2024, and their themes include family, nature, friendship, culture and truth-telling. Barkindji man Little Jason joins Katie to talk about the music and to introduce his new JOY show, Hot Bread, which will occupy the Miss Chatelaine timeslot for the next few months while Katie takes a break. Here is the playlist:

They include moving tracks by Aotearoa’s Georgia Lines, Western Australia’s Emily Barker, and gay US artist Wrabel with the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles. Katie is a bit croaky this morning as she is recovering from a cold, but she warms herself and the listeners up with a bunch of songs about moving on, the peace of sleep, losing a loved one, what could have been, being overwhelmed by feelings, the need to win at all costs, love for a brother, and more.
