There are approximately 18 inches between our brains and our hearts.  Many people know of God, have embraced the concept of God, but never enter into a relationship with God, never allow Him to be the center of their heart.  Balaam was one of those people, he was a prophet, communed with God regularly, but because of his desire for money and prosperity, he never allowed God to be the center of his heart.  There are valuable lessons in the story of Balaam.
