It’s time for the final mission.

After seven episodes learning how weather works, reading the sky, forecasting severe storms, tracking supercells, understanding tornadoes, and exploring hurricanes, our young storm chasers have one last challenge: put everything they’ve learned to the test.

In this action-packed finale, the team must analyze real weather clues, make forecasting decisions, choose a chase target, and safely navigate a developing severe-weather outbreak. But the atmosphere doesn’t always behave exactly the way a forecast says it will—and when the storms begin to explode, the team will have to think like real meteorologists and storm chasers.

Episode 8 brings the science from the entire Storm Chasing Academy together inside one final adventure. Kids aren’t just learning about weather anymore. They’re learning to read the atmosphere, recognize danger, make decisions, and understand the incredible science unfolding in the sky above them.

🌀 STORM CHASING ACADEMY — EPISODE 7: INTO THE HURRICANE

What would it be like to fly straight into one of the most powerful storms on Earth?

In Episode 7 of Storm Chasing Academy, we're leaving tornado country behind and heading into the tropics to explore the incredible science of hurricanes.

Our young storm chasers join the legendary NOAA Hurricane Hunters and climb aboard a specially equipped P-3 aircraft for a flight directly into a hurricane. Along the way, they'll discover how tropical cyclones form, why warm ocean water acts as their fuel, how hurricane winds organize around the eye, and what scientists are actually looking for when they deliberately fly into these enormous storms.

The adventure takes them through violent turbulence, towering eyewalls, and finally into the strange calm at the center of the storm.

But getting inside a hurricane is only part of the mission.

Kids will learn how Hurricane Hunters use instruments and dropsondes to measure the storm, how meteorologists forecast where hurricanes may go, what the famous hurricane forecast cone actually means, and why storm surge, flooding, wind, and tornadoes can make these storms dangerous far beyond the eye.

We'll also explore hurricane categories, storm naming, preparation and evacuation, and how the information gathered inside a hurricane can ultimately help protect people on the ground.

It's meteorology, aviation, adventure, and some of the wildest weather on the planet—all in one mission.

🌪️ STORM CHASING ACADEMY — EPISODE 6: TORNADOES, DOPPLER & THE ULTIMATE CHASE VEHICLES

Not all tornadoes look alike—and when a storm is wrapped in rain or darkness, sometimes the most important clues aren't visible in the sky at all.

In Episode 6 of Storm Chasing Academy, our young storm chasers dive deeper into the incredible world of tornadoes and learn how professionals track some of the most dangerous storms on Earth.

We'll explore the different shapes and types of tornadoes, from skinny rope tornadoes and classic cones to enormous wedges and multiple-vortex tornadoes. Kids will discover why a tornado's appearance doesn't necessarily tell the whole story—and why even a small-looking tornado deserves serious respect.

Then it's time to turn to one of a storm chaser's most powerful tools: Doppler radar.

We'll learn how to read radar reflectivity and velocity, what those colorful radar images actually mean, and how meteorologists can spot rotation hidden inside a supercell. Kids will begin recognizing some of the radar clues that can warn of a developing tornado—even when nobody can see it from the ground.

And, of course, no storm-chasing adventure would be complete without the machines built to go where ordinary vehicles shouldn't.

We'll explore some of the legendary storm-chasing vehicles designed to survive extreme conditions, including the Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV) and the armored Dominator vehicles. Why are they so heavy? How do they protect their occupants? And why would anyone intentionally drive one toward a tornado?

It's tornado science, radar detective work, incredible engineering, and storm-chasing adventure rolled into one episode.

🌪️ STORM CHASING ACADEMY — EPISODE 5: INSIDE A SUPERCELL

What turns an ordinary thunderstorm into a rotating monster capable of producing a tornado?

In Episode 5 of Storm Chasing Academy, we're getting inside the science of supercells and tornado formation as our storm chasers track a developing severe thunderstorm across the Plains.

Kids will discover how warm, humid air near the ground combines with instability and powerful winds higher in the atmosphere to create some of the most organized thunderstorms on Earth.

We'll explore wind shear and see how changing wind speed and direction can create horizontal rotation in the atmosphere. Then we'll follow that rotation as a powerful thunderstorm tilts it upright, helping create the rotating updraft known as a mesocyclone.

But a rotating supercell isn't automatically a tornado.

As the storm evolves, we'll investigate its structure and learn to recognize features including the updraft, downdraft, wall cloud, rain and hail cores, and rear-flank downdraft. We'll follow what happens beneath the storm as rotation tightens—and explore the complicated science behind why some supercells produce tornadoes while many others never do.

This episode takes kids beyond simply recognizing a scary cloud. They'll begin understanding the incredible three-dimensional machine operating inside a severe thunderstorm and how meteorologists and storm chasers read the clues it provides.

It's atmospheric science, extreme weather, and a front-row seat to one of nature's most incredible processes.

⚡ STORM CHASING ACADEMY — EPISODE 4: LIGHTNING!

A thunderstorm is building overhead. The sky flashes—and a few seconds later, thunder BOOMS across the landscape.

But what actually just happened?

In Episode 4 of Storm Chasing Academy, we're diving into the electrifying science of lightning and thunderstorms and discovering how one of nature's most spectacular—and dangerous—phenomena actually works.

Our young storm chasers investigate what happens inside a towering thunderstorm as ice crystals, water droplets, and graupel collide and electrical charges begin separating inside the cloud. Kids will learn how enormous electrical differences build until the atmosphere can no longer hold them back—and lightning suddenly bridges the gap.

We'll explore negative and positive charges, stepped leaders, streamers, return strokes, cloud-to-ground lightning, intracloud lightning, and positive lightning, including why some bolts can strike surprisingly far from the storm itself.

And what about thunder? Kids will discover why lightning makes the air around it explosively hot, how that rapidly expanding air creates the sound of thunder, and how counting the seconds between a flash and the boom can help estimate how far away lightning is.

We'll also investigate some of lightning's strangest phenomena, from sprites and other electrical flashes high above thunderstorms to the incredible temperatures and power contained in a single bolt.

Most importantly, we'll learn how to stay safe when thunder starts rumbling—and why "when thunder roars, go indoors" is advice worth remembering.

⛈️ STORM CHASING ACADEMY — EPISODE 3: CLOUDS & BUILDING A THUNDERSTORM

Every thunderstorm starts somewhere—and long before the first rumble of thunder, the sky is already giving away clues about what's coming.

In Episode 3 of Storm Chasing Academy, our young storm chasers learn to read the clouds and follow an ordinary patch of rising air as it grows into a towering thunderstorm.

We'll discover how clouds form when warm, moist air rises, expands, and cools until water vapor condenses around tiny particles in the atmosphere. Kids will explore why some clouds stay small and harmless while others grow thousands of feet into the sky.

Along the way, we'll meet some of the major cloud types, learn what their shapes and heights can tell us about the atmosphere, and discover why recognizing clouds is one of the most useful skills a future storm chaser can develop.

Then it's time to build a thunderstorm.

We'll follow the life cycle of a thunderstorm from the developing cumulus stage through the mature stage and eventually into dissipation. Kids will explore powerful updrafts and downdrafts, towering cumulonimbus clouds, instability, precipitation, and the enormous movement of air and water taking place inside a storm.

We'll also investigate how hail forms as powerful updrafts carry ice through freezing portions of a thunderstorm, allowing hailstones to grow before gravity finally wins and sends them crashing toward the ground.

By the end of the mission, those clouds overhead won't just look like shapes in the sky. They'll be clues—and our storm chasers will know how to start reading them.

How can meteorologists know dangerous weather is coming before the first storm even forms?

In Episode 2 of Storm Chasing Academy, we travel back to the historic April 2011 tornado outbreak to discover how meteorologists read clues hidden throughout the atmosphere—and how modern weather forecasting can save lives.

Kids will follow the developing weather situation as warm, humid Gulf air surges north, cold air advances across the country, and powerful winds race through the atmosphere above. Long before tornadoes begin touching down, meteorologists can see that the ingredients for a major severe-weather outbreak are coming together.

But how?

We'll explore the layers of Earth's atmosphere, discover where our weather actually happens, and learn about the powerful jet stream moving high above our heads.

Then we'll investigate air masses and weather fronts. Kids will learn what happens when enormous bodies of warm, cold, moist, and dry air collide—and why cold fronts, warm fronts, and stationary fronts can produce very different kinds of weather.

We'll also head inside the world of modern meteorology to see how scientists gather their clues using weather satellites, Doppler radar, weather balloons, radiosondes, computer forecast models, temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind measurements.

In Episode 1, we're answering the most basic—and most important—question in meteorology:

What actually is weather?

Our adventure introduces kids to the world of storm chasing and the scientists and explorers who deliberately travel toward some of the most powerful storms on Earth.

We'll investigate the basic ingredients controlling the weather around us, including temperature, air pressure, moisture, wind, and energy from the Sun. Kids will begin discovering why air moves, why weather changes, how meteorologists observe the atmosphere, and why understanding these invisible forces is the first step toward predicting what the sky might do next.

We'll also enter the world of severe weather and tornadoes through the story of the devastating 2013 Moore, Oklahoma EF5 tornado—an unforgettable example of both the tremendous power of the atmosphere and why scientists work so hard to understand dangerous storms.

What makes a tornado an EF5? How do scientists determine a tornado's strength? Why would researchers and storm chasers willingly get close to something so dangerous? And can information gathered from these storms actually help save lives?

By the end of Episode 1, the sky won't just be the sky anymore.

It will be a puzzle waiting to be solved.
