Colossians: “There’s No Place Like Home”

Most of us are familiar with the phrase, “There’s no place like home.” “Home” may not be a physical place, but a place of security and strength within a family, or significant relationship. Often, when we are in trouble, returning to a physical place or people can bring comfort and security when we need it.

God offers to everyone “A place to call home” called the church. A family or community of people who help us walk together as we follow the Lord. This study in Colossians will teach us about the beauty of the church and how it can be a place to call home for everyone who chooses God.

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the people of God in Colossae who needed encouragement and correction so that others who did not have a relationship with God, would have the opportunity to know Him (Jesus). Their city was known for searching for truth through the sciences, they lived during an age of tolerance, no absolutes, but still looking for change and a sense of authentic community.

Why we are studying Colossians:

1. We live in an of the search for science

2. We live in an age of “tolerance”

3. We live in a world with hardly no absolutes

4. We live during a time when people are looking for change

5. We live in a season where people are looking for genuine community

In verses 1-14, Paul expresses his joy and prayers for their growth in knowing Christ and reminds them to not forget how God delivered them from all the darkness of sin and brought them into the wonderful light of knowing Jesus Christ and having eternal life.

God wants them to know that their story of how God delivered them, can affect others who do not know God or do not have a place to call home, to find a personal relationship with God.

God delivered His people (Israel) from the slavery of Egypt. He wants us to know that He can deliver us too from the slavery of sin.
