Jesus promised that in this world we would face trouble (John 16:33). When that trouble comes in the form of persecution because of our faith in Christ, it can be deeply discouraging. Relationships can be complicated, and life is often crazy and unpredictable, making joy in difficult moments a real challenge. When relationships struggle or break, it can even derail us spiritually. Yet no matter what happens, God gives us an internal joy that empowers us to move forward and use every situation to advance His kingdom in someone else’s life, just like the Apostle Paul.

God calls each of us to the joy of serving one another in “His house” - the church. Our faith comes alive when we serve on an MVCC service team. When people come to visit our services, we want them to feel loved and cared for by the Lord, as He uses each of us.

The greatest privilege we have is partnering with God in His mission in the world. The most powerful way we do that is to simply “be the people of God.” Jesus did not tell His followers to try to become salt and light; He declared that we are the “salt and light of the world.” Our calling, then, is to live this out daily, becoming His hands and feet to those we meet along the roadside of life.

With the New Year come all our best intentions to dig in, work hard and become the best version of ourselves in the coming year. It’s tempting to believe that with enough of our own effort we can achieve whatever success we want. But Jeremiah tells a different story. Trust in human effort is doomed to fail, while trust in God is the foundation for any true success. The only way to stay spiritually nourished and strong in the coming year is to remain rooted in Jesus. A deep and abiding relationship with Jesus requires focus and attention, but it yields results that will dramatically improve the coming year.
