None of us desire to intentionally make our life worse. We all want to grow and progress. The fastest growing category in publishing today is self-help / personal development. We’re all looking for answers to improve our lives. However, from our passage today, we will be challenged to consider that something is always ruling our desires. When sin becomes our master, it will lead us to death. When obedience to God is our master, we are led to life. Therefore, everything we are truly searching for in life is found on the other side of surrendered obedience to Jesus.

Sometimes it is easy to think things like, “Well, if I do what God doesn’t want me to do, He will forgive me anyway.” The wonderful truth of God’s word is that He has already won the victory over sins that easily get a stronghold on us. Romans 6 tells us – the old person is dead, dead to sin!

Deciding to follow Jesus is a big deal, and it changes everything! And while that decision can happen in a single moment, the implications of that decision are eternal. Acts chapter 2 tells the story of how several thousand people at once all decided they would follow Jesus. It shows us what motivated them as they made that decision. And, very importantly, it shows us what practical, real-world steps they took in order to begin following Jesus well. Their experience provides a model for those of us who are following Jesus more than 2,000 years later. We have much to learn from these first followers of Jesus.

The wonderful thing about God is that He always remains faithful and consistent with what He says in His word. Our salvation is assured that we are saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8). The Apostle Paul uses Abraham in the Old Testament as an example to show how people are made right with God through faith in God alone and not by works.
