Missouri Musicians: Then and Now

Somebody threatens you with a pool stick because you will not play the cover they want, and you start asking hard questions about why you are even doing this. That story is just one stop in our conversation with Andy Roose, an Americana singer-songwriter who knows what it means to fight for original music and still come back with something honest to say.

Andy balances two full-time worlds: his day job at Grants Farm in the St. Louis area, where he helps care for animals in a massive open-air deer park, and his nights in the garage studio writing, recording, and booking gigs. We talk about growing up in bluegrass, becoming a multi-instrumentalist, stepping away from music for 15 years, and the exact moments that pulled him back into songwriting. If you care about craft, you will love his “lyric hoarder” mindset, his real-world approach to capturing ideas, and the way songs can take minutes or take years.

We also get into home recording and modern music tech, from building a simple setup to tracking full albums in Audacity, plus the never-ending puzzle of mixing and mastering. From there, we zoom out to the bigger questions facing musicians today: streaming platforms, listener attention spans, live attendance, and why listening rooms matter when your songs are built on storytelling. Andy shares how writing sad songs connects to depression, therapy, and the rare but unforgettable moments when a listener truly hears you.

If you enjoy original Americana, folk, country blues, and songwriter conversations that do not dodge the hard stuff, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who still listens all the way through, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

The Evolution of the Local Music Scene with Drummer Adam Kennedy

What happened to full-band rock shows at the Lake of the Ozarks? Adam Kennedy joins me to share wild stories from the 2000s and 2010s, how a chance meeting at Gerbes helped launch his music career, his welcomed yet unexpected turn to an acoustic band, and how the central Missouri music scene has changed over the last 25 years.

Enjoy this conversation with my former bandmate as we take a "back in my day" look at band life, venue budgets, and keeping the passion for music alive.

Adam occasionally posts reels of him drumming on his Facebook

The Copper Creek band is unlike any band that I've had on the show! They play in unique venues, have a unique style, and their overall outlook on being musicians is extremely refreshing! Founding member Mike Gorman (guitar/vocals) opens my eyes to many things I had never considered in my days of being a musician.
