Members Reviews:
An author at her best
This is Susan Hill at the top of her form. I really enjoyed this book all the way to the finish.
It is a beautifully written, evocative book, with all the deft touches Hill fans expect.
There are moments of Dickensian brilliance: perfect names, unusual characters, and yes, a convenient coincidence or two. At other times, the piece becomes Kafkaesque: is our protagonist on a senseless quest, inexorably led on from one place to another only to find his ruin?
The search for the elusive Vane culminates in an ending which leaves more questions unanswered than resolved. I love that in an otherworldly tale like this. I recommend it to all who love a chilling ghost story, but save it for this fall, when a chill is in the air...
A rare find in the world of ghost stories!
Believe me when I say I have read a lot of ghost stories!
This is so well-written (by the author of The Woman in Black) and the descriptions are so vivid that it is like being right there in a haunted library at a very old boys school in England. Many other locales and situations in the book spring to life with the able narration of Matt Addis. I am so reluctant to have this book end that I have been rationing it out on my walks to make it last!
Get it - you will not regret it, and you will have a good story to listen to around the fire as autumn and the holidays approach. There is a great chapter showcasing Christmas in the English countryside.
It is so rewarding to find a tale like this - enjoy!
Thank you Susan Hill!
Snore fest
I'm giving this two stars because of the high-quality writing. When it comes to dramatic prose, Susan Hill can't be beat. But yet, the story was drowning in the pages upon pages of setting details. When James Mommouth walks into a room, we get flooded with every painstaking detail - from the wallpaper patterns to the specks of dust on the bookshelf. Typically with audiobooks, I tend to appreciate these long, meandering riffs because I don't miss out on anything important when my mind wanders. But geez - this lady takes mood and setting to a whole new level of overindulgence. After the first couple chapters I was already tired of this stuffy man's inner monologue as he crept around dark rooms. I really didn't care for this dude, especially when he likened himself to a "scared silly woman" in one of his many eventless eerie interludes. Needless to say, this is my first and last Susan Hill book. For gothic horror, I'll turn to Barbara Michaels or Wendy Webb.
I couldn't stay interested
It was a struggle to finish, but since I loved Woman in Black, I was sure that if I hung in there, then it would get better, reach its climax and would be worth it. There was no climax, in fact, just the opposite. What a disappointment.
Not for me.
Guess I expected more having read all her crime novels, which I love.
