On 24 March 1944, 335 civilians and political prisoners were murdered in retaliation of an attack against the SS Police Regiment Bozen the previous day. For each German policeman that was killed, one Italian would be executed in retaliation. The massacre took place inside of the tunnels near Via Ardeatina. Caseloads of cognac were delivered to calm the officers' nerves, many who had never participated in anything of this nature.
