What is Essential in your life Part 4: Not Good Enough: The Power of God’s Goodness
Genesis 50:15-21
It may seem odd on the Sunday after Independence Day to share a sermon on the power of God’s goodness! In fact, it may seem odd not to focus on God’s grace “shed on thee,” or on America as a “shining city on a hill.” Never mind that Jesus called the church to assume this position among all the nations of the world. The whole notion of a “royal priesthood” might pale in comparison to the power of the state (1 Peter 2:9). Nevertheless, we ask: How does the power of God’s goodness provide a message of hope to a people struggling to remain faithful in a time of uncertainty? Indeed, how may we, as God’s chosen, overhear what God is saying to us as both citizens and disciples?

In a world becoming fragmented through racism and war, in a nation becoming fractured by violence and poverty and drugs, —the promise of God’s goodness remains steadfast.Despite our worst intentions, God redeems. God can take the fragile pieces of our lives and weave them into a new creation, working behind the scenes to shape a whole new future. That future brings Redemption-the hope of forgiveness, acceptance, and freedom.

Jesus is Prophet, Priest, and King. In Him we have a new record, regeneration, freedom, the Holy Spirit, a new heart, a new power, a new heaven, and a new earth. Things are not the way they are supposed to be right now. We are in a strange interim time. Jesus will return and make all things new. Between now and then we have a foretaste and appetizer for what is to come. Life is fleeting but there is real hope. We have the promise of a future hope for tomorrow. The kingdom has come, you have been delivered from sins penalty, the kingdom is coming, you are being delivered from sins domineering power, there will be no evil, no suffering, no pain, no injustice, no death, humanity will rule over God's creation with joy. You can already taste it now (taste and see that the Lord is good).
Our hope is in Him making all things new and He will do it! He is making us new every day!

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ Phil 1:6

God desires the transformation of the entire world not just one particular people. Our church desires to become like our community not the other way around. This includes welcoming the stranger and the outcast (the one thrown away and left to die). This does not mean compromising the gospel, it means being a church of multi-ethnicity and multi-cultures. One Lord, one faith and one baptism. We are more than good enough. We are the children of the most-high God!

Unexpected Setbacks
June 28, 2020
Genesis 17:15-22
Setbacks are a part of life. How many of you have ever had a setback? When you receive the setback news, you will either fall apart or choose to find the good in the situation and trust God. The second choice is much, much harder than the first, but the payoff is immeasurable. Sometimes we only see the terrible thing in front of us and do not realize that it could have been far worse. What we make of setbacks, how we handle them, and what we choose to do about them defines us and makes us who we are. When you choose to look for good and you handle setbacks with godly grace, it points people to your source—God! We may not love disappointments and setbacks, but we should not hate them. Instead, see them as opportunities to say, “What is good about this?”

The story of Abraham and Sarah requires us to cross the threshold of faith in ways we cannot imagine. Do you ever wonder what could have been going through Abraham’s and Sarah’s minds as they received the news, they were going to have a baby. We know that God made a covenant with Abraham and promised to make him the father of many nations. We have journeyed with Abraham and Sarah to this juncture, and now we are left with a question: How will God work out the covenant promises? How will hope be victorious where barrenness rules?

Perhaps it is an understatement to share that in times of uncertainty people begin to look for hope. In fact, as the Presidential campaign warms up, we see that politicians run on the theme of hope, proclaiming that they represent a break with the past; indeed, they are the ones who can provide hope! Give hope a chance! In times of uncertainty, it is easy to send out a search party to find hope. Where can we find it? Where is it?

Since, the shutdown of America in March, the protesting, and the violence in June, we may be asking the question, “what does the future hold?” Will people continue to resort to endless violence and vocal bashing of one another? What is happening in our country is a tragedy felt across faith traditions. We are a center of Hope. As a church, we are to create a safe, nurturing environment where folks can come and hear the truth of the Gospel, experience the Holy Spirit, and be challenged to follow God’s call in their lives.

"What is Essential in Your Life?" Part 2 (Self-worth/Approval of Others)
Matthew 10:29-31

We all like to be appreciated. Psychologists tell us that it is one of the greatest desires in every individual. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that you enjoy being appreciated—we all do. Whether it is a pat on the back from your boss, a handshake of appreciation from your pastor, or a simple “thanks, dad” from your child for making pancakes for breakfast, we all want to be appreciated. Appreciation provides us with a sense of purpose, and it is one of the most powerful motivators.

But we get into dangerous territory when we begin to rely on the approval of others to determine our self-worth or the level of joy in our life. We can begin to volunteer at church so everyone will see what good Christians we are. We can pray with a little more zeal to show friends how spiritual we are. We can try to be the perfect dad and husband in public so people will notice and recognize our accomplishments. If we are not careful, we may find ourselves doing the right things— for the wrong reasons. If you start viewing your importance, your ability, and your worth the way you think those around you view it, it is time for a change. If you are constantly seeking the approval of others to determine your happiness, you will find yourself living a very unhappy life. If you put too much emphasis on what others think, you may make decisions based on how you think others will respond, not based on your own purpose, destiny, desires, or God’s word. Let God remind you who you are in Christ today!

In Matthew 10:29-31 we have one of the most important Scriptural reminders of the love of our Heavenly Father for His children. It tells us how far reaching God’s love is: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?” asked Jesus. “Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So, don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

What a moving testimony to the very intimate love that God has for each of us. A second grader once asked his teacher how much the earth weighed. The teacher looked up the answer on the Internet. “One thousand trillion metric tons,” she answered. The little boy thought for a minute and then asked, “Is that with or without people?” Viewed from one perspective, it might very well seem that people do not really matter very much in the grand scheme of things. After all, we are but microscopic inhabitants of a somewhat miniscule planet orbiting a relatively obscure star in a small galaxy among the billions and billions of stars and galaxies that make up creation. Yet the God of creation has counted the very hairs of our heads. Wow! What a magnificent picture of the love of our Heavenly Father.

From Self-Criticism to Self-Evaluation (becoming the witness Christ calls us to be)

So often we can be our own worst enemies. We set unrealistic expectations for ourselves and are critical of ourselves when we do not live up to them. But self-criticism is a destructive process that can undermine what God wants to accomplish in our lives.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt creep in: Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin at serenely and too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

It’s time to borrow a page from God’s playbook and give yourself some grace. We are all works in progress. We all make mistakes, we all drop the ball, and we all fall short.With Gods help we can get back up and get into the game again

There’s always room for improvement and yes, we should make a habit of evaluating our own lives. Everyone needs to make adjustments at times to get back on track to living a more fulfilled and productive life, but there is a big difference between self-evaluation and self- criticism. Self-evaluation is a constructive, beneficial exercise that helps us recognize the areas where we need to improve. On the other hand self-criticism is a destructive force that can lead to discouragement, discontent, and depression.

If we want a change in our lives, then instead of constantly criticizing ourselves and tearing ourselves down, we need to build ourselves up by meditating on and speaking aloud God’s word. God is not in heaven criticizing you. He is at the head of a great crowd of witnesses cheering you on! God’s word has strength, direction and promises for you— if you will seek them out. Ask the Lord to help you in areas you need to improve. By his spirit and through his word, you can accomplish anything.

Peace Over Frustration (Refusing to be Frustrated)

Do you ever feel fatigued? Our fatigue is often caused not by work, but by worry, frustration, and resentment.

Life is full of little daily annoyances and frustrations. There are inconsiderate drivers, fast food drive-through clerks who never get your order right, and endless series of red lights when you’re in a hurry, the clueless shopper that takes 45 things to the 10 items or less check out register, and on and on.

Maybe you face frustration on a higher level— like feeling as though you’re stuck in a dead-end job, or trying to get through to a rebellious teen. Perhaps you are frustrated with yourself because you just cannot seem to lose weight or stick with that exercise plan. Maybe you cannot find the opportunity to spend quality time with your spouse or kids or you feel you are not on the spiritual level you desire. Whatever the source, frustration can keep you agitated, upset, and just no fun to be around.

The Bible has an excellent weapon to keep frustrations from infiltrating your life. It is maintaining an attitude of gratitude and cultivating a lifestyle of thanksgiving. When you catch yourself starting to get frustrated, start saying out loud, Lord with your help I refuse to get frustrated, I have a lot to be thankful for. Then begin to say some of the things you are thankful for out loud. Your frustration will start to melt away like a snowball in the hot August sun. If it is a problem that needs to be solved, then ask for God‘s help. He said he would give wisdom to anyone who would ask (James 1:5).

Refuse to let petty frustrations affect you or steal your joy. Instead, enter into God’s presence by giving thanks and praising Him!

This Sunday we honor the Trinity. Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost to honor the Holy Trinity—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although the word “trinity” does not appear in Scripture, it is taught in Matthew 28:18-20 and 2 Corinthians 13:14 (and many other biblical passages). People are often frustrated trying to understand how the Trinity plays out in their life. The concept of the trinity can never be completely understood or rationalized, but it is clearly taught in Scripture.

Understanding of all scriptural doctrine is by faith which comes through the work of the Holy Spirit; therefore, it is appropriate that this mystery is celebrated the first Sunday after the Pentecost, when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit first occurred. Understanding the roles of the Trinity brings us indescribable peace.

From Stress to Joy (Power to Overcome Stress)
Pentecost Sunday
Acts 2:1-21
We are no strangers to stress. This pandemic is really weighing on folks. Mental tension and worry caused by our problems and life in general can be a hallmark of daily life. Stress can fuel cancer, shrink the brain, age you prematurely, lead to clinical depression, weaken your immune system, and increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. In short, stress is killing us.

And it is not just the big events in our lives that causes stress. It is the day-to-day grind we put ourselves through. We live in a fast-paced society where it is common to have an overly busy schedule. Day in and day out, we sacrifice ourselves for our job, our friends, our hobbies, and our family. You may be a student trying to work and go to school, a dad trying to work two jobs to provide for your family, or a stay at home mom cleaning the house and taking the kids to school and practices— if stress is killing you slowly, it’s time to put on the brakes.

It’s not God‘s will for you to live a life full of stress. The Bible tells us that we can maintain a sense of peace in our lives. So, what do we do to break the stress cycle?

Simply starting your day with a morning devotional, a few minutes of prayer can set the tone for a stress-free day. Listening to worship music and meditating on Scripture throughout the day can help you keep your sanity and maintain a peaceful spirit. Try embarking on your day infused with the peace and joy of God in your heart. It will help you to sail right through those potentially stressful situations with ease and grace.
