James Taylor, Senior Journalist at Surf Coast Times joined the program to discuss the latest on the Surf Coast- including the rainbow flag, Rip Curl Pro and proposed redistribution of federal division boundaries.

Creative Geelong President Jennifer Cromarty appeared on Mitchell’s Front Page along with Renew Australia Manager Angela Simons to talk about the Victorian government’s $250,000 announcement of funding for a plan to breathe new life into vacant spaces in the Geelong CBD.

Cr David Bell appeared on Mitchell’s Front Page live in Lorne to talk about a range of issues affecting Surf Coast Shire.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson appeared on the program to talk about the proposed renaming of Corangamite to Cox. “The Liberal Party has made a decision to object to both the boundary change and also the name. The name has already prompted a fair amount of sniggering on social media. I don’t think it’s an appropriate name.” She also spoke about infrastructure spending, comments by Barnaby Joyce, Land 400 and the improvement of mobile reception in the Otways.

Research fellow Dr Megan Prictor spoke to the program about the new Commonwealth Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme. According to Dr Prictor, the scheme stops short of similar measures overseas, saying that here: major breaches are exempt; businesses have much longer to investigate breaches than overseas; many businesses remain unaware of the rules (which began in February), unconcerned about the risk of data loss and poorly prepared to protect people’s information.

There is a yearly spike in the unnecessary and cruel drowning of platypus after the Easter long weekend, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has found. DELWP Senior Wildlife Investigator, Mike Sverns said: “Opera house nets are an issue for platypus all year round, but we’ve has noticed the four-day weekend, combined with the favourable autumn fishing conditions that surround this holiday, make for a deadly combination. “The nets trap and prevent air breathing animals, like platypus, from escaping, and eight years of data shows that discarded and ‘ghost fishing’ opera house nets are most often encountered post school holiday or public holiday breaks.”
