Accessing midwives in regional Australia can be challenging, according to midwife, maternal and child health nurse Belinda Joyce.  “For many mothers throughout Australia, particularly in rural and remote areas, local maternity services have been closed for years, forcing them to travel unimaginable long distances for maternity care,” Ms Joyce said. “We’ve all heard many stories of babies born before arrival to hospital in far north Queensland and now mothers not being able to access midwife-led care or home birth options in Tasmania.”

Geelong Sustainability is lobbying state planning minister Richard Wynne to reject the gas import terminal proposed by Viva Energy for Corio Bay.  The organisation recently ran a community briefing, with event organiser Sally Fisher saying that the number of people who attended the briefing “exceeded [Geelong Sustainability’s] expectations and indicates significant community concern about the gas import terminal.”

The Friends of the Barwon have welcomed the decision by Councillors of the Surf Coast Shire to refuse to grant approval for an application to develop a fourteen thousand head sheep dairy on the outskirts of Inverleigh. Spokesperson Kaye Rodden joined the program to discuss the decision.

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria has called for the development of a new Multicultural Strategy for Victoria, recommending that more than $150 million be allocated in May’s State Budget as part of a broader extension of the Victorian Government’s approach to engagement with migrant and refugee communities. ECCV Chairperson Eddie Micallef said the development of a new Multicultural Strategy was critical to ensuring government policies and services are inclusive, equitable and responsive to migrant and refugee communities. “The past year has been difficult for the whole community, but the challenges faced by migrant and refugee communities have been building over a longer period of time,” Mr Micallef said.
