HVOB - Azrael

Austrian electronic minimalists HVOB, or Her Voice Over Beats (I’ve also seen the “B” representing “Boy” or “Band”), consists of Anna Müller and Paul Wallner. The duo offer up Azrael, a pulsating, yet somehow melancholy, banger that I can only hope is an ode to Gargamel’s evil cat Azrael from the Smurfs, but more likely refers to God’s archangel of death from the Quran and Bible. I am the first to admit that I am a sucker for songs that build slowly, even better when they culminate with a vocal line very late into the mix, and Azrael does not disappoint in either regard; the infectious, minimalist rendition drives forward for over four and a half minutes before the ethereal and breathy alto of Müller’s voice offers counterpoint to the echoed drum machine metronome that syncopates throughout the mix. “He lacerates, the heavens like a curtain ready to fight” …she is definitely paying homage to a cartoon cat.
