Automatic - Skyscraper*
Hailing from Los Angeles, the absolutely brilliant three piece band Automatic consist of Izzy Glaudini (synths, lead vocals), Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) and Halle Saxon (bass, vocals). The trio channel acts like Le Tigre whilst also carrying the torch for post punk/new wave bands like The Slits, Tom Tom Club and Wire (with an a bit of Velvet Underground psych influence for additional good measure); despite all these similarities, Automatic still feel fresh, innovative and modern. Their second full-length, Excess, on Stones Throw Records was easily one of my favorite albums of 2022 and still gets many routine listens due to its raw yet also somehow polished stylings, coupled with its subversive and idealogical lyrics. Skyscraper offers up alienation and anti-capitalist angst over a slick, post-disco drum break, ethereal 80’s synths, and Glaudini’s brooding monotone delivery which all helps to highlight their anomie, “Change if you want or stay the same, there’s no difference in the end. It’s a shame that you gotta play the game, where every dollar gets you off.”
