Royal Otis - Oysters in My Pocket*

New South Wales group, Royal Otis developed a small following when their early 2022 Bar n Grill EP cleverly combined jangly, indie and psychedelic rock on tracks like the catchy Oysters in My Pocket. Leveraging techniques used by many great current Aussie bands, Royal Otis adeptly blend 60s surf rock with 80s new wave to create music embedded with an instantaneous neo-nostalgia. The duo, consisting of Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, saw even greater commercial appeal when their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, gained popularity in Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy Saltburn. Channeling bands like New Order and Violent Femmes, “Oysters in My Pocket” relies on the chant-like singing and frenetic strumming of both lads as they pine away for lazy summer days, slurping up salty mollusks.
