Kim Andrews, Executive Director of the Japan America Society discussed the groups programming supporting cultural, educational and economic relations between Japan and the US.

Dr. Scott Stephenson, President and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution, discussed the museum, which celebrated its second anniversary in April.  He described its founding, based on the collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society, begun Episcopal Priest W. Herbert Burke, with the purchase at auction of General George Washington's military war tent.  Now the cornerstone of the museum, it's surrounded by a permanent collection and objects on loan from private collectors and families.

He discussed how the museum presents artifacts in accessible, interactive ways and humanizes the stories to attract contemporary audiences.  He spoke on the museum's efforts to relate the stories of the native peoples, women and people of color, using diaries and personal papers.   We discussed the museum's more scholarly work, too, its archives, its continuing search for artifacts and its upcoming consortium.   The museum will present its first international exhibit in the fall, 'The Cost of the Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier;'  looking at the war's impact on a soldier fighting for the British.

Finally, a look at upcoming events and Dr. Stephenson invites everyone to attend a 'History After Hours' event, cocktails, conversation and hands-on activities after the museum's regular hours.

As a veteran of independent and major record labels including Warner Brothers, Wil Seabrook has performed for audiences reaching millions on international TV and radio. He has always been passionate about sharing a positive message with the largest possible audience. Wil founded his 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Rock for Human Rights (R4HR), in 2011 after being asked to help create music for one of the stunning Public Service Announcements produced by United for Human Rights. That experience and the resulting introduction to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights inspired Wil to become more involved in this vital campaign. He realized that beyond simply creating and sharing his own original music, he could utilize his success and experience in the music industry to make even more of a difference by enlightening audiences, especially school kids, about their basic human rights through live music performances and engaging live talks.

Executive Director Larence Kirby discussed the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs and its work to ensure the state's veterans get the services and benefits to which they're entitled.  He noted there are some 72,000 vets in Delaware and he spoke of the commission and its members, now representing some of the younger and the female vets.  He discussed the unique needs and experiences of the different generations and how they service them all, with housing and GI Bill educational benefits, as well as disability and job services.  He acknowledged that the state could be more 'military friendly' in its taxation, which could lead to more vets in the job pool, he noted companies want to hire vets for their training and commitment, but the cost of living is higher as Delaware is one of the few remaining states to tax military pensions.   We discussed getting vets to the services and benefits they have earned and he described the paperwork required and how vets can access information and help.   He concluded with information about the upcoming Memorial Day services, May 25th at the Northern Cemetery and May 30th at the War Memorial Plaza, and the Flag Day services at the DCVA's Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery on June 14th.

Shaun Gines, Senior Manager for Community Development, gave us tips on staying healthy, the obvious stop smoking, watch your diet and alcohol consumption and exercise, but also the current recommendations on screening, from mammograms to colonoscopies.   After telling us the current statistics and success stories in treatment, he discussed research in cancer prevention and the society's funding of innovative and small projects.  Finally - a reminder that it take money to fund the programs and research and the return of Daffodils, a traditional ACS fundraiser, buy flowers or bulbs through February 5th to benefit their programs!  For more information on the health tips, screening guides, or to order daffodils, visit CANCER.ORG
