MMA on Player FM

Dominant wrestling won the day at UFC 322, with Islam Makhachev dominating to win the UFC Welterweight Championship from Jack Della Maddalena, and Valentina Shevchenko retaining against Zhang Weili. The rest of the fights were more exciting, and we discuss all of it in the first half of this week's show.

In the second half we look at some of the week in MMA news, and at the upcoming UFC Fight Night: Tsarukyan vs. Hooker coming up from Qatar.

Catch us Wednesday nights at 6:30pm on CFMU 93.3 FM, and online at http://www.thehammermma.com, The Itunes Store, MMAPodcast.com, Player.FM, find @SteveJeffery on Twitter or just email us.

UFC 322 is officially in the books, and in the main event, Islam Makhachev captured the welterweight championship with a one-sided performance against Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev certainly has options, and while Kamaru Usman has continuously put his name in the hat, will the UFC go that direction, or allow the exciting, new blood of the division get their chance?

On an all-new edition of On To the Next One, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee discuss what's next for Makhachev and #JDM after their headliner at Madison Square Garden. Additionally, future matchups are discussed for Valentina Shevchenko and Zhang Weili after the women's flyweight champ's successful title defense in the co-main event, Michael Morales following his first-round knockout of Sean Brady, Carlos Prates after stopping former champ Leon Edwards, along with fellow main card winner Benoit Saint Denis, and more, along with listener picks.

UFC 322 looked terrific on paper, and in practice, it delivered several highlight reel moments. Benoit Saint Denis starched Beneil Dariush in just 16 seconds to open the main card. Not to be outdone, Carlos Prates became the first person to ever knock out Leon Edwards. Then Michael Morales stopped Sean Brady inside the first round. That was followed by Valentina Shevchenko absolutely dominating Zhang Weili from bell to bell. It was so lopsided I felt sorry for Weili.

Finally, we saw another lopsided beatdown in the main event when Islam Makhachev 50-45’d Jack Della Maddalena across the board to win a second belt. It was a mauling that even John Pork had a hard time watching. Now that we’ve reviewed the main card, let’s check out the rest of the results and bonuses while we’re here.
