Porkbelly, Chapter 17 (The Universal Eye). Railey, the 22-year-old heroine and Roman, her late 20s, English love interest, discover Johnson, a transient, living in the stairwell beneath her back porch on a warm November evening in Chicago. Railey is intrigued by Johnson's vagabond lifestyle and has compassion for his rough life. Roman sees him as a threat and a parasite. The divergence in the couple's views over Johnson leads to their first fight.
