Nothing beats the complex protective phytochemistry of herbs when it comes to reducing chronic illnesses and slowing down the aging process. All plants have a defense system that consists of chemicals called phytochemicals, which help protect them from invaders and stressors. These same phytochemicals can neutralize free radicals, toxic substances, and even radiation for our bodies. With their anti-microbial properties, herbs are an excellent addition to any health-conscious individual's daily diet.
Phytochemicals are more than just protective agents for plants. They also possess remarkable antibacterial properties that can fend off viruses, fungi, protozoa, and other harmful microorganisms. Interestingly, the antibacterial properties of herbs vary depending on their natural environment and the type of stress factors they encounter. What's even more fascinating is that these herbs' anti-microbial activity is selective to specific pathogens without disrupting the gut flora or causing any side effects.
In this episode, Dr. Bill Rawls, a renowned expert in integrative health and medical director of Vital Plan, shares valuable insight on the essential herbs to take as we age. He breaks down how much of these herbs we should be taking and the format to follow so that you can discover which herbs are perfect for your individual health needs. Mushrooms are a great superfood that we’re not talking about enough, especially when it comes to healthy aging. Aging doesn’t happen when you’re 65 and all of a sudden you’re old. It occurs gradually, and you have to start taking care of yourself now, and mushrooms will help you ease the process. All mushrooms have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties, but each has a unique benefit to your health.
Incorporating medicinal mushrooms like Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane into your daily health routine can support healthy aging. The combination of these two powerful mushrooms can help clear brain fog, provide relief from hot flashes, boost low sexual drive, and increase energy and vitality that often decline with age. Cordyceps, known as the Himalayan Viagra in traditional Tibetan medicine, is a stamina builder while Lion’s Mane is traditionally used for cognitive memory and concentration functions. Don't let age slow you down - add these powerful mushrooms to healthy aging.
In this episode, Founder of West Wolf Medicinals Nicole Pressly Wolf reveals the amazing benefits of medicinal mushrooms in enhancing your overall health and promoting healthy aging. She emphasizes the exceptional properties of Cordyceps and Lion's Mane in particular, making them great for supporting healthy aging. For those interested in watching the video version of this interview, head over to the Modern Aging YouTube channel, type in "mushroom," and it will appear.

About Nicole Pressly Wolf -
Raised as a city girl and a lifelong environmental activist, journalist, and secret science nerd, Nicole never imagined she could farm or care directly for the earth beyond her written activism. Moving West, she wanted her next “career” to be intentional work in a practical and tactile environment, not in front of a computer. Oh, and yeah — for the benefit of all.
Now, with America's fungi awakening, Nicole has found her true way forward. Since the move, she has become fascinated with mushrooms and devoured books, films, and teachings. She attended numerous mushroom-growing workshops. Nicole started a daily supplement of powdered mushrooms looking for support with all that comes with aging, from brain power to general energy. Within weeks she noticed her memory had improved, and her energy was up. She was hooked! All that she has learned about the fungi kingdom inspires awe and wonder. Farming mushrooms and creating a permaculture farm has allowed her to offer health to her family, community, and the planet.

Don't worry about picking the ideal time; just pick a consistent time that works for you and stick with it.

The world we live in can be chaotic and ever-changing, which can lead to us looking outward for answers to our life's meaning. However, the truth is that all the answers we need are inside us; whether it's for inspiration, healing, purpose or wisdom - our inner life is all we need. We are the experts of our own lives and must remember this when looking for comfort and security amongst a sea of uncertainty.
Learning how to navigate constant change can lead us away from our inner-selves. We may lose touch with our true selves, and focus more on the external. This can leave us feeling disconnected and scattered. To bring balance back into life, it is essential to turn the attention inward by practising stillness, meditation, mindfulness or prayer contemplation. These activities help you shift out of your stressful thoughts and into a space of peace and calm. In that moment of inner-peace we are connected to all.
In this episode, Uda Erasmus talks about his 80-year journey and the importance of careful introspection. He shares how to effectively unlock our gift of life and enjoy it to the fullest. Learn how to find meaning and answers in our lives and make sure we don't waste this precious gift.

Chronic depression can have devastating effects on all aspects of an individual's life, including their sleep. While pharmaceutical medications are a popular option for treatment, they are not always suitable and can come with unwanted side effects. However, in recent years there has been a rise in evidence to support the use of Ketamine therapy to combat chronic severe depression.
Dr. Mai Shimada is here to share her story about the impressive healing properties of Ketamine. After struggling with mental health issues, she found that Ketamine relieved her symptoms and improved her overall well-being. If you know someone who is struggling with chronic depression, this conversation could be beneficial for them.
In this episode, Dr. Shimada discusses the power of ketamine therapy to heal depression and other mental disorders. She explains that when we are experiencing mental health difficulties, our brains are altered in a way that can make it difficult to escape the negative thinking loop that can be caused by depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Ketamine makes our brains more plastic, which is why psychotherapy assisted by ketamine is effective in helping us transform.
