We explore how colonial history, slavery, Eurocentric beauty standards, and social hierarchies can influence the way people view their own culture, appearance, language, and identity. We also examine how colorism creates unequal treatment based on skin tone, often giving more privilege and positive recognition to lighter-skinned people.

In this episode of Mofongo Diaries, we talk about the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York and how it grew out of the Puerto Rican migration to the city in the 1940s and 1950s. We explain that it became as a religious festival, later became a parade in Spanish Harlem in 1958, and then moved to Fifth Avenue, where it grew into a major public event.

In this episode we discuss the serious problem of femicide and gender-based violence in Puerto Rico. We explain that this is often minimized, and we focus on how domestic violence, stalking, threats, and women being killed are not being addressed with the urgency they require.

We then discuss how machismo and family patterns shape violence. We talk about how violence against women has existed across generations, how some men are trained to normalize toxic behavior, and how abuse in childhood can affect later behavior. We also note that abuse of boys and double standards around male victims are often ignored.

Finally, we reflect on how these issues affect families personally. We talk about experiences with abusive relatives, protective grandparents, and cases where children were expected to stay with abusive mothers because of court bias. We end by saying we have to protect children, call out harmful behavior, and take violence against women and girls seriously.
