Hello!!! We are FINALLY back with A NEW EPISODE! Thank you so much for your patience. This episode is quite interesting and we'd love for you to stick with us until the end.

【Introduction】

From this episode onwards, we'll say goodbye to Downton Abbey (if you would like more DA content, please let us know in the comments below, and we can make some adjustments) and talk about more classic works of literature! We will start with the different definitions of tragedy by Chinese and Western standards and discuss three main questions: Is The Dream of the Red Chamber a tragedy? What is the difference between Chinese and Western (for the purpose of comparison, we have no choice but to slightly generalize the wide range of works, sorry!) tragedies? Are tragedies caused by fate or human failures? In the end, we'll also share some inspirational wisdom with you all, so please stay tuned for that!

【Introduction】

Episode 2 discusses the two families of the two works: Jia and Crawley, and their main characters. A comparative analysis of the representative characters is made at three levels: first generation (grandmother/ matriarch), second generation (parents), and third generation (the young male and female protagonists). On the basis of an overview of the social origin, ideology, behavior, and development of fate in each generation, we compare and analyze the internal and external dynamics of the change in the fate of the main characters. We also focus on the very different but poignant love stories of several male and female protagonists.

【Introduction】

My mom and I will begin our exploration of comparative literature by discussing the Chinese novel, Dream of the Red Chamber and the British TV drama, Downton Abbey. They might seem different on a surface level, but they in fact have various similarities. We will spend 8 to 10 episodes comprehensively comparing the two works, specifically covering context, family relationships, character traits, love stories, female growth...... as well as food, mansions, clothing, artifacts, and other interesting topics. 

Episode 1 is an introductory "first-glance" into this series. We will explore the comparability of the two works, analyze their international influence, trace the development of story lines and contexts, introduce some characters in the two works, and finally, touch on the purpose of comparing Chinese and Western literary works. We look forward to delving deep into these topics with interesting souls-- our listeners!
