Just over a year and a half later, John H. Glenn, Jr, as a member of the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery for mission STS-95, launched on October 29, 1998. At 77 years of age, Glenn was the oldest astronaut to fly in space, nearly twice the age of the average astronaut.
