You know the week it happened. A woman at a kitchen table told you to let go and trust Him — so you wrote it on a card, put the card in the drawer with the batteries, and quit picking at it for five months.

And it went the other way.

Then last night the breaker tripped and you went down fourteen stairs in the dark, and your hand closed on a two-by-four a carpenter screwed into a stud forty years ago. A man you never met. Work you have never once inspected.

You put your whole weight on a stranger’s carpentry and it didn’t cost you a thought. 🪚 

You’ve heard trust in the Lord as instruction about your feelings. Get calm. Produce the settled face. But the Hebrew under trust isn’t about your face — it means to run for cover. A place you go, not a mood you work up.

You were never required to arrive composed. If trust is a shelter, you can come in soaked. ☔

I trust You with her.

You said it eleven times in a parked truck and not one of them got past the windshield. 😔

You weren’t faking. You meant it harder each time — that’s the problem. Somewhere around the eighth you stopped praying and started pressing, trying to say a thing loudly enough that your chest would agree with your mouth.

Then you quit, and you decided something about yourself on the way up in the elevator. You’ve been carrying that verdict ever since. 💔

Here’s what nobody told you. Believing and faith are not the same thing. Believing is yours — and it is not nothing. It’s very often the exact place God hands the other one over. But you cannot manufacture faith by working harder at believing, and that is what you were doing in the truck.

A father once stood in front of scribes and said both halves out loud: Lord, I believe — help my unbelief. He didn’t tidy it. He didn’t wait for the contradiction to resolve. And nobody sent him home to work on it first. 🙌

😔 You know all the words. That is what makes it worse.

Grace. Mercy. The blood. The cross. With you always. You can say every one of them in a parking lot and mean it — and you have not heard God in any of them for longer than you want to admit out loud.

🔥 Two men walked seven miles the wrong direction with the risen Christ opening the Scriptures to them. Men who had it memorized. 🥘 You've been standing in the pantry eleven minutes.

The dish isn't yours. It came Thursday, four days after the funeral — white ceramic, a chip out of the near corner. You've washed it twice. The second time wasn't because it was dirty. 😔

 And you cannot take it back empty. 🫙

Here's the part you've never said out loud: she cooked for you and you cannot cook back — and you've spent eleven minutes proving it. You'd rather have been the one on the porch.

🛒 You had the thought — then talked yourself out of it before you got to the car.

Four days later you had it again, faster. 😔

A song in a grocery store at 6:52 on a Tuesday. A stranger who said have a blessed day. Your daughter at the sink, asking if you still pray. You've started counting, and told nobody you're counting. 🌙 The question keeping you up isn't why is this happening. It's: am I doing this to myself?

This episode answers with a verb. 📖 When Jesus said no one comes to Me unless the Father draws him, He chose the word John uses for hauling a net toward a boat — not towing one behind it. 🎣 Force, and a destination. 🚪 You're paying emotional rent on a door God already helped you through.

🔒 There's a room you keep locked so you think God won't see it. He was in there working while you were surviving it.
💔 You think you've been protecting God from being embarrassed about you. He was carrying you the whole time.

🚪 There's a door in your life you keep closed. Not from your family. From God.

🕯️ You'd never say it out loud, but underneath the not-looking is a hope most of us have carried for years: maybe He wasn't watching during that part. 

💸 So you keep paying. Not in dollars — in attention, in distance, in the energy it takes to hold a door down. You bring Him the cleaned-up parts of your life and can't understand why He feels far away.

Why am I here? 🌙 It's 2 a.m., the house is quiet, and it's the only question left in the room — the one you'd never say out loud at a dinner party.

It's the purpose question, and every answer we get handed starts the same way. Look inside. Find your why. Define your truth. Which quietly assigns you an impossible job: author a life you didn't begin, then judge whether it was worth it.

Job watched men try it three thousand years ago. They tunneled through granite, turned mountains over by the roots, came up with silver and gold. ⛏️ Then he stood at the mouth of the shaft and asked what the whole chapter was built for: But where can wisdom be found?

You can tunnel through granite and come up with ore. You cannot tunnel through yourself and come up with meaning.

So we open Psalm 139 where almost nobody starts — at the beginning. Not with a man searching for meaning, but with a God who has already done the searching.
