Here is another word that remained, more or less, intact and travelled to England via Latin and Old French. However, this time it came specifically through religious texts and all the words associated with it have this one as their root. Μονός (monos) in both ancient and modern Greek means single. The infinitive is μοναζειν (monazin). To live alone. The place where a religious person would go to devote themselves to god is called a ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΙΟΝ/MONASTERY
