  • Sound Planning, with Julie Gustafson
In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Julie Gustafson. After nearly three decades in wealth management and banking, Julie decided to dramatically change gears; she left her reliable job and transitioned to video and documentary production - this was quite a pivot from financial services. The common thread was that her work continued to focus on harnessing personal experiences. Julie and her business partner were telling the stories behind the art collections of their clients for the benefit of those who will inherit the collections, whether that be next generation of the family, a museum, or an unknown future buyer. When choosing to take this career risk, Julie followed her guiding principles: Begin with plan A, have plans B and C available if you need them, and talk through large expenses before plunging in.
Julie is President of MJG Advisory LLC, a company that works with clients in the business, art, and philanthropic sectors to identify and to develop their unique story—their “voice”—for use in marketing, fundraising or other strategic needs. Julie’s first career (in Finance and Banking) began while still in college, and what started as a part-time job turned into a successful journey spanning nearly three decades, most recently with U.S. Trust (now Bank of America Private Bank) in Chicago. In addition to finance and her three “must haves” (families, art, and philanthropy), she has deep interest and experience with the often complex financial and emotional dynamics associated with multigenerational wealth.
Prior to launching her own business, Julie served as Co-Founder and President of Heirlooms on Video, a company which produced video documentaries for art collectors and others in the art world. Outside of work, Julie serves on the boards of Special Olympics Illinois Foundation and Arts of Life, and is Co-Chair of the Chicago Chapter of ArtTable, a national organization whose mission is to support and to provide opportunities for women leaders in the visual arts.
