In this episode, Liam talks to Lord Karan Bilimoria, Founder of Cobra beer and President of the Confederation of British Industry. Born in Hyderabad, Lord Bilimoria was educated in the UK.

While still in his twenties, he set up Cobra – “to create a beer with the refreshment of lager, but the smoothness of ale, the perfect accompaniment to curry”. A qualified chartered accountant and lawyer, Lord Bilimoria eventually sold a controlling interest in Cobra to the Canadian brewing giant Molson.

He is now Chancellor of Birmingham University – the first Indian-born Chancellor of a Russell Group University. He became CBI President in June 2020.

In this episode, Liam talks to Andrew Forrest – the legendary Australian mining mogul who set up both Anaconda Nickel and the Fortescue Mining Group. Forrest is one of the world’s leading advocates of hydrogen energy – and backs in particular the use of “green hydrogen”- produced by splitting water via electrolysis, using electricity from renewable sources. Forrest dubs so-called “blue hydrogen”, the production of which involves fossil fuels, “purely marketing” and “a con”. 

Visiting the UK for the COP 26 summit, Forrest has just teamed up with JCB – a leading UK supporter of hydrogen fuel – with the British firm signing a deal to buy 10 per cent of Fortescue’s global green hydrogen production and manage its UK-wide distribution.

In this episode, Liam talks to John Mills, Founder and CEO of JML Ltd. JML employs 

hundreds of people, turns over tens of millions of pounds each year and sells mainly household goods, often via shopping channels, all over the world. Mills is one of the UK's most experienced and respected import-exporters. He's also a trained economist and his many essays and books on economic policy are highly influential across Westminster, Whitehall and beyond. On top of that, perhaps unusually for a business titan, John Mills is the Labour party's biggest private donor - only the trade unions fund the party to a greater extent. Having run a global business for many years, Mills supported Brexit and was Chairman of Vote Leave – the officially-designated group which campaigned for the UK to leave the European Union.

In this episode Liam talks to Martin Bysh, the Co-Founder and CEO of the Bristol-based fulfilment centre Huboo.

Martin describes how, having grown up in the East End of London, he developed an interested in computer programming and gaming, skills he transferred into the field of logistics. Having launched just a few years ago, Huboo specializes in smaller clients, and operates a micro-warehouse "hub" model that generates quicker and more bespoke fulfilment outcomes for its growing list of e-commerce clients.

This episode features Gareth Stace, the CEO of UK Steel – the trade body for the British-based steel industry, which still employs more than 30 thousand people.

For years, fierce international competition and high domestic costs has seen UK steel plants struggle to be competitive in a global market. Now, the coronavirus pandemic, and an increased focus on steel decarbonisation, are bringing the government’s strategy towards the sector into sharp focus.

In 2019, the UK produced 7 million tonnes of steel. China produced 142 times more. Energy costs, of course, are also key – for steelmakers and manufacturers in general – who tend to be heavy energy users. And, unlike for households, there is no energy price cap for firms.

In this episode, I talk to advertising industry legend Martin Sorrell. After working at Saatchi and Saatchi group during the 1980s, Sorrell then set up the world's largest advertising and PR group - WPP. 

Since leaving WPP, Sorrell has set up yet another business, S4 Capital, which is focused entirely on digital advertising - this at a time when digital advertising now accounts for the majority of the world's multi-billion-pound global advertising spend.

In this episode, Liam talks to Mark Fane, Co-Founder of Crocus, a horticultural company based in Sunningdale, Berkshire, that grows flowers and plants - which it sells, for the most part, on-line. 

Crocus, like so many businesses, initially viewed both Brexit and then this Covid pandemic, as potentially disastrous. What's happened, though, is that over the last few years, Crocus has thrived, quadrupling its capacity to fulfil orders in the face of soaring demand, while taking on more and more staff.
