Hello and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
Μονός (monos) in modern Greek means 'single' and τόνος(tonos) means -among other things- a musical 'note'. Something odd happened in 1706, the combined word that travelled from France was used... metaphorically and meant something tiresome, a lack of variation. The literal use in English started in mid 1700. ΜΟΝΟΤΟΝΟΣ/MONOTONE
