Montana’s Democratic Congressional hopeful Kathleen Williams is accusing her opponent of misrepresenting her on a number of issues in his campaign materials. Williams stumped in Whitefish on a campaign swing through the greater Flathead Valley Tuesday, where she said Republican incumbent Greg Gianforte had misrepresented her position on a strong border, her support of the Second Amendment and her opposition to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Spending in the campaigns for and against I-185 has made it the most expensive ballot measure race in Montana history. The ballot initiative to raise tobacco taxes and continue Medicaid expansion has drawn more than $17 million in spending from tobacco companies. Most has come from cigarette maker Altria, and it’s more than the company has ever spent on any proposed ballot measure nationwide. That’s according to records from the National Center for Money in Politics dating back to 2004.

President Donald Trump has confirmed he’ll visit Montana one more time Saturday, to spur his conservative base, three days before the midterm election, at a rally at Bozeman Yellowstone International airport.

Outside groups supporting the candidates in Montana’s U.S. Senate race have now dumped close to $33 million into the race, bringing total spending in the contest to date to around $60 million , a record. Recent polls say the race between Republican Matt Rosendale and Democrat Jon Tester is tightening. The candidates are making their final push to convince the remaining undecided voters, rally their base, and attract media attention.

Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton faced criticism this week for awarding a $265,000 contract to a political ally. The Associated Press reported that Stapleton paid longtime political ally Jake Eaton $265,000 for a rush printing job to fix mistakes in the Montana state voter information pamphlet. Now, MTPR has learned that Stapleton has other financial ties to Eaton, and has also hired Eaton's wife to defend the Secretary of State’s office in court.

Campaign contributions in the fight over Montana ballot initiative 186 have roughly doubled over the last month, most of that money is backing opponents of the initiative’s proposed new regulations on mining. MTPR's Nora saks reports from one of their events in Butte.

A Republican National Committee official says a recent mailer unintentionally included an error about Montana's absentee ballot deadline. State Political Practices Commissioner Jeff Mangan received complaints about the mailer and has been in touch with the RNC.

A newly released poll says Republican Greg Gianforte has a 7-point lead over Democrat Kathleen Williams in the race for Montana’s lone seat in the U.S. House. The poll of nearly 2,000 voters was conducted between mid-September and early October by MTN News and Montana State University. It shows Gianforte’s lead over Williams is outside the margin of error, giving him a decisive lead.

The head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which has spent nearly $5 million to influence the outcome of Montana U.S. Senate race, stumped on behalf of Matt Rosendale in Montana Tuesday during a get-out-the-vote tour.
