Preservation architect Leslie Gilmore explores the history and architecture of the lodge, which has served Bozeman’s Masons for the past 125 years. The evolution of the building’s architecture since its construction in 1890 represents both the lodge’s desire to keep up with changing styles (evident elsewhere on Main Street) and an economic response to the building’s maintenance needs. Dr. Pamela Stewart, Arizona State University, details how Gittings—who served as director of the University of Arizona’s Department of Physical Education and Athletics from 1920 to 1954—devoted her career to “educating the body” and used physical education as a path to gender equality. During Gittings’s time in Montana, she not only directed women’s physical education at the University of Montana, but also homesteaded and advocated to keep her position at UM while she served in Turkey at the close of World War I.
