On Sunday, July 30th, a scene of relief unfolded near a Norwood trailhead. Firefighters had successfully contained a fire that spanned about 5 acres, a blaze ignited by a solitary bolt of lightning. The expansive lands of Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests — all part of the vast jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service — had been under threat, their dry vegetation and fallen timber all too ripe for combustion.
