I was inspired to create the NoiseToKnowledge podcast by my short-lived college post-rock band, Goodrich. Our music was ambient and instrumental.
We would set up at a bohemian late night coffeehouse in downtown Grand Rapids, begin to drone in some minor key, and just drift with improvised reverberated guitars, prerecorded loops, and analogue synths.
As we would drift, the coffeehouse crowd would slow down. You could hear the clink and clatter of dishes interspersed with the chatter and murmur of soften conversations.
The lights dimmed low allowed the orange glow of street lamps to illuminate corners of the room, while scents of nag champa and patchouli filled other spaces.
A strange thing would happen once the drone would come to a soft landing. People in the audience would tell us how our music made them think, imagine, and contemplate.
Our music created a sonic space for losing oneself in contemplation, reflection, and thoughtfulness. And all we ever did was make noise.
The ambient music you hear in the background of these podcasts, particularly the flagship Episode 2 (Link), is designed to create a slower, more reflective and contemplative mood while listening to thoughtful passages, lectures, or interviews.
Today we find ourselves washed in the quick paced chaos of noisy news, social media, and popular chatter. It is NOISE.
The NoiseToKnowledge Podcast invites you to practice your ability to slowdown and be more reflective, measured, and thoughtful for the purposes of helping to develop a more knowledgeable perspective on our noisy media environment.
