Curious Meerkat

Morality, censorship and legislation

Listen Later

Inter-seasonal episode 1:

Laetitia Cassells from the University of Pretoria is finishing her PhD on the topic of morality, legislation, and censorship. She joins the Curious Meerkat to talk about what should be legislated, and how morality and obscenity has been legislated, particularly in Apartheid-era South Africa, and how we are still dealing with these sentiments in 2020.

The definition of obscenity and what is moral and "publishable" or "fit for consumption" has been contentious, and how inappropriate content has been banned and disposed of comes up in this conversation.
