MORE CAT THAN DOG: David Marr on Patrick White

Listen Later

It’s thirty years since David Marr wrote his landmark biography of Australian Nobel laureate, novelist Patrick White. In this provocative  and revealing  conversation, Marr reflects on his relationship with his subject and its  enduring impact on him, admitting that  although White could be a curmudgeon, Marr came to adore him.

He talks about the significance of White’s snobbish Anglophile mother,  the discovery of a substantial cache of letters after his death, the break up of his relationship with Sidney Nolan and the crucial role of White’s  life partner, Manoly Lascaris while voicing  strong opinions about the kinds of biographies that annoy him.
