  • S3E3: Let Them Eat Birthday Cake | The Girls Next Door Recap: Marie Antoinette, Kendra’s Costume & the Cake Disaster

    Send us Fan Mail

Holly plans the elaborate Marie Antoinette birthday party of her dreams—but between Hef’s sacred Movie Night schedule, Kendra’s last-minute costume crisis and one extremely unlucky custom cake, Versailles starts looking a little less than perfect.

This week on More Girls Next Door, Megan revisits Season 3, Episode 3, Let Them Eat Birthday Cake, originally aired on March 17, 2007.

Holly transforms the Playboy Mansion into an eighteenth-century fantasy filled with powdered wigs, French food, towering hairstyles, custom royal portraits and enough ribbon to wrap a midsize SUV. Bridget creates another perfectly coordinated gift basket, Hef surprises Holly with a hot pink Playboy golf cart, and the Mansion staff commits so fully to the theme that even Guest Services ends up in powdered wigs.

Meanwhile, Kendra waits until the day of the party to find a costume, rejects the Snow White dress Holly offers her and somehow turns an old pirate outfit into something that almost works. But after seeing the beautiful period-inspired gowns Holly provided for several other guests, we have to ask: Was the Snow White costume a sincere attempt to help—or was Kendra being set up to stand out for all the wrong reasons?

We also investigate the repeated attacks on Holly’s custom birthday cake, revisit the rigid Mansion routine that forced her celebration to work around Hef’s weekly Movie Night, and examine Holly’s haunting final declaration that her life was “perfect.”

Plus, the Y2K Vault looks back at the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith in February 2007 and the celebrity news frenzy that dominated pop culture in the weeks before this episode aired.

    Send us Fan Mail

Star Wars costumes. Horseback riding through the Hollywood Hills. Kendra’s bedroom looking like it qualified for federal disaster relief. Somehow… it all makes sense in this episode of The Girls Next Door.

This week on More Girls Next Door, Megan recaps Season 3, Episode 2, May the Horse Be With You, originally aired on March 10, 2007.

(Some) of the girlfriends decorate the Star Wars Rose Parade float, Holly sets out to make friends outside the Playboy Mansion by organizing a horseback riding adventure inspired by old Hollywood, and Kendra attempts to follow through on her New Year’s resolution to become “cleaner and classier”… with a little help from former Playmate Julie McCullough.

Along the way, we revisit the bizarre history of Sally Rand’s Nude Ranch, learn why Bridget was relieved Kendra skipped the Star Wars outing, watch Hugh Hefner test-drive a motorized beer cooler, and look at the subtle ways each girlfriend was beginning to imagine a future beyond the Mansion.

  • S3E1: Snow Place Like Home | The Girls Next Door Recap: Charity, Snow in LA & Kendra’s Tantrum

    Send us Fan Mail

Christmas arrives at the Playboy Mansion with thousands of lights, personalized gifts, an adopted family in need and $10,000 worth of real snow covering the front lawn.

In this episode of More Girls Next Door, Megan recaps The Girls Next Door Season 3 premiere, “Snow Place Like Home,” which originally aired on March 3, 2007.

Holly and Bridget throw themselves into creating the perfect Mansion Christmas, from assembling gifts for a family whose home was destroyed by fire to convincing Hef to transform the Los Angeles estate into a winter wonderland. Bridget enters full Christmas-production mode, Holly reflects on gratitude and family, and Kendra attempts to wrap presents before gifting Hef one of the strangest novelty items ever featured on the show.

But behind the cheerful editing, the day reportedly unfolded very differently. According to later accounts, one of the girlfriends isolated herself from the group, criticized  merry traditions and refused to film while the cast, crew and  family waited.

We examine how production pieced together the happy holiday story viewers were shown, the Mansion rule that required the girlfriends to spend Christmas with Hef, and what each woman appeared to be chasing beneath the lights, presents and manufactured snowfall.

Plus, the Y2K Vault revisits Steve Jobs introducing the original iPhone and a world still dominated by Razrs, Sidekicks, MapQuest printouts and digital-camera cables.

What sounds like a simple business opportunity quickly becomes a fascinating look at body image, branding, and the growing realization that the girlfriends are becoming marketable personalities far beyond the walls of the Playboy Mansion.

    Megan breaks down:

    • Why a workout DVD was the ultimate mid-2000s celebrity milestone
    • The very different ways Holly, Bridget, and Kendra approached fitness

In this bonus episode of MORE Girls Next Door, Megan takes a closer look at “Life in the Centerfold,” Joan Acocella's 2006 article for The New Yorker examining Playboy, Hugh Hefner, and the evolution of the magazine's most famous feature: the Playmate centerfold.

Using the publication of The Playmate Book: Six Decades of Centerfolds as a launching point, the article explores the image Hefner spent decades trying to perfect—the elusive "girl next door with her clothes off."

  • S2E12: Girls Will Be Ghouls | The Girls Next Door Recap: Halloween at the Mansion, Celebrity Costumes & Escaping Reality

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of MORE Girls Next Door, Megan recaps “Girls Will Be Ghouls,” where the Playboy Mansion transforms into one of its most iconic annual events: the legendary Halloween party.

Between elaborate costumes, celebrity guests, haunted attractions, and a packed dance floor, the Mansion becomes a playground of fantasy, spectacle, and pure mid-2000s excess.

    Megan breaks down:

    • Why Halloween may have been the perfect Mansion holiday
    • The different reasons Holly, Bridget, and Kendra each loved the event
    • How Holly approached costumes as creative projects rather than party outfits
    • Why Bridget seemed completely at home in the world of Halloween fantasy
    • The celebrities, Playmates, and costumes that filled the Mansion that night
    • How Halloween temporarily allowed the girlfriends to escape their usual roles
    • Why this episode feels lighter than many of the emotional storylines surrounding it

Plus: a Y2K reference from 2006, when paranormal television reached peak popularity and millions of Americans became amateur ghost hunters overnight. If a camera caught a blurry orb, a creaky floorboard, or a suspicious cold spot, there was a very good chance someone on cable television was about to call it evidence.
