Dr. Emily Brown is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and Associate Department Chair in the College of Education at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Her background includes working with children and their families as an elementary school counselor and mental health counselor. Her research focuses on counseling children who have experienced loss, crisis, or trauma with a particular focus on children of incarcerated parents. In this episode, we further our discussion on addressing the needs of children with incarcerated parents. Dr. Brown discussed the needs of children with incarcerated parents through the lens of mental health. More specifically, we highlighted common experiences of children with incarcerated parents (e.g., feelings of loss, stigma and shame, instability, etc.) and the consequences of these experiences. Dr. Brown provided recommendations and resources that will aid in supporting and advocating for children with incarcerated parents.
