Mrs. Quianya L. Enge is a community navigator and educator in economic development. Mrs. Enge received her Bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Inner City Studies, a Master of Education in Workforce Education and Development, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Higher Education and Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Beyond the Walls (BTW). This episode is a part of a special segment highlighting Advocacy and Activism, which highlights individuals, supporters, or organizations who are making efforts to advocate and support returning citizens and their journey back to their communities. In this episode, we discussed Mrs. Enge’s passion for serving individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. Mrs. Enge discussed her inspiration behind BTW and her future goals for this organization. In addition, she discussed how BTW is making a positive impact in the Southern region of Illinois. Dr. Emily Brown is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and Associate Department Chair in the College of Education at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Her background includes working with children and their families as an elementary school counselor and mental health counselor. Her research focuses on counseling children who have experienced loss, crisis, or trauma with a particular focus on children of incarcerated parents. In this episode, we further our discussion on addressing the needs of children with incarcerated parents. Dr. Brown discussed the needs of children with incarcerated parents through the lens of mental health. More specifically, we highlighted common experiences of children with incarcerated parents (e.g., feelings of loss, stigma and shame, instability, etc.) and the consequences of these experiences. Dr. Brown provided recommendations and resources that will aid in supporting and advocating for children with incarcerated parents.

Kristin Turney, Ph.D. is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. Her current research examines the consequences of criminal justice contact for family life: repercussions of criminal justice contact on the wellbeing of children and families over time; the relationship between criminal justice contact and family inequality; and evaluates the processes through which criminal justice contact fosters resilience. In this episode, we aimed to give the audience a better understanding of the needs of children with incarcerated parents. Our discussion included drawing parallels between parental incarceration and child well-being, and the consequences of parental incarceration. Dr. Laura Abrams, MSW, Ph.D. is a Professor and Chair of Social Welfare at UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. Her ethnographic scholarship has critically examined experiences of youth in the US justice system through reentry and the transition to adulthood. Currently she is pursuing research in the area of youth justice policy, urban youth civic engagement, and the aftermath of youth sentenced to life in prison. In this episode, we aimed to give the audience a better understanding of juvenile justice, reentry, and transition age youth. More specifically discussing how formerly incarcerated young men and women navigate reentry, and how it impacts their transition to adulthood. Our conversation included discussing pathways to delinquency, the importance of understanding and addressing the reentry needs of youth, and pathways to desistance for youth. Dr. Abrams provided us with a plethora of recommendations across various levels to better support and assist youth involved with the criminal justice system.

Ms. Sheba Williams was born and raised in Richmond, VA. She has a multitude of degrees and licenses including a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, a Master’s Instructor license, and professional licenses in Cosmetology and Barbering. While working as a mobile barber stylist and being actively involved in so many community service projects, Sheba found that more people than she realized had at least one thing in common with her... a felony conviction. Her passion for helping others be more than a conviction led to her starting a nonprofit, Nolef Turns in 2016. The organization was born to be a support system for those with justice and court involvement but quickly evolved into a day-to-day fight for removing the policies and stigmas around a past conviction. This episode is a part of a special segment highlighting Advocacy and Activism, which highlights individuals, supporters, or organizations who are making efforts to advocate and support returning citizens and their journey back to their communities. In this episode, we discussed the inspiration, development, mission, and reentry efforts of the Nolef Turns. In addition, we discussed how people can become involved, and upcoming reentry events. Jacob Bitters' is a 34-year-old father of 3 who is desperately trying to rebuild relationships with his children after being out of their lives for so long. While incarcerated, he was fortunate enough to receive a degree from WASHU and to attend LaunchCode (still involved in both). He works with the STL Reentry Collective and is an advisor for WASHU PEP programs. In this episode, we discuss his recent release from incarceration, as well as the various challenges he has encountered. Mr. Jacob’s discusses dealing with the trauma of incarceration while trying to fit into a society that makes him feel unwanted. In addition, he discusses personal traumas that have impacted his life. Mr. Jacob describes that he is trying to build his life so that he can be the father, son, and brother that his family desperately needs.

Dr. Kimberly R. Kras, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University, where she teaches in the Criminal Justice and Public Administration programs. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri-St. Louis following a career with the Missouri Division of Probation and Parole. Kim’s research examines the lived experiences of people experiencing reentry from prison and their process toward desistance. Her work has specifically looked at the role of housing, social support, fines and fees, and most recently, employment in the reintegration of legal system involved people. She also considers how community corrections organizations, and their staff employ evidence-based practices to support (or hinder) the reintegration of justice-involved people. In this episode, we aimed to give the audience a better understanding of the challenges of a sexual offense and how those challenges impact reentry outcomes for these individuals. Along with how to reduce societal stigmatization and recommendations to help support individuals with a sexual offense.

Dr. Caitlin Taylor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at La Salle University in Philadelphia. Her research centers on the collateral consequences of mass incarceration as well as challenges faced by returning citizens. Her work has been published in The Prison Journal, Justice Evaluation Journal, and several others. In this episode, we aimed to convey the importance of social support and how it shapes reentry outcomes. More specifically, discussing the different aspects of social support that are often involved in the reentry process. We discussed various relational roles that have been perceived as beneficial to returning citizens and examined the differences in social support needs across genders. Lastly, the conversation highlights the importance of providing social support during the reentry process and ways in which we can better provide support for returning citizens.
